Senators Want Details On Twitter’s New Censorship Policy

shutterstock_censorship.jpgTwo U.S. Senators want Twitter to give more details on how and when it will censor content when requested to do so by foreign governments.

“We understand that Twitter has an obligation to comply with legal requests that do not violate human rights,” Tom Coburn, R-Okla., and Dick Durbin, D-Ill., wrote in a letter to Twitter CEO Dick Costolo. “And we appreciate that you are taking steps to minimize the impact of censorship. However, your announcement leaves important questions unanswered.”

Last month Twitter said it would censor some tweets in certain countries if requested to do so by that country’s government. The company followed up the announcement by saying users could read censored tweets if they changed the location setting of their account to Worldwide.

According to the policy, users in countries where tweets are blocked will be notified when they have been denied access. People trying to view tweets in the country where they are censored would receive a message saying the content had been blocked.

Presumably if someone were in Germany, where posts about pro-Nazi content is banned by law, they could change their country setting in Twitter to the United States and be able to view the blocked content. The page notes that the manual override is there for users whose country has been misidentified.

But Coburn and Durbin want more details on the new policy. Among the details they are seeking:

  • The exact procedure for handling a request from a foreign government to censor content.
  • Whether or not Twitter will keep a log of those requests
  • Who in the company makes the final decision on whether or not to withhold tweets.

The company has yet to respond to the letter’s questions. We asked Twitter to comment and will update when they get back to us.

Microsoft, 24/7 Want To Better Serve Your Customers

shutterstock_customer_service.jpgIn a world envisioned by a partnership between Microsoft and 24/7 Inc. announced on Tuesday, you’ll someday receive a text message that your flight has been canceled, call a customer service number and be able to view flight options on your tablet as you discuss rebooking your travel with the customer service agent on the other end of the line.

It seems pretty basic, considering all that we’re capable of doing in tech. But as anyone who has been put on hold for tech support, received a robo-call about suspicious activity on their credit card, or tried to deal with sudden travel changes can attest, dealing with customer service still seems to be stuck very much in the pre-Internet age.

That’s where the Microsoft and 24/7 partnership comes in. Together, they will develop a Pedictive Experience (PX) paltform capable of handling 2.5 billion online and telephone customer service interactions each year.

“From speech to touch to gestures, consumers expect and demand more natural and intuitive ways to interact with technology,” Zig Serafin, general manager, Online Services Division at Microsoft, said in a statement. “This same demand will change how consumers interact with businesses, and it creates an inflection point for how people will expect businesses to provide customer service. “

The firms say not only will they help companies link customer service over multiple platforms, but they’ll help companies figure out what your preferred platform is and make it easier for you to get the fixes you need.

“All of us are quickly coming to expect companies to communicate with us in proactive, more natural and intuitive ways, and on the devices we use in our daily lives,” Serafin wrote about the deal on Microsoft’s official blog. “We should expect businesses to reach out to us when we need service, and to do so in a way that anticipates how we want to be communicated with; whether that’s through our smartphone, our PC or through our TV if we happen to be in the living room.”

Of course the deal isn’t all about altruistic good will to consumers: the market for customer service applications like the ones proposed by Microsoft and 24/7 is huge and expected to grow. The announcement also follows a long-building trend of Microsoft working to offer more, specialized b-to-b solutions.

The deal also includes the shuffling of some Microsoft employees, as well as Micrsoft taking an unspecified ownership stake in 24-7, according to ZDNet.

Tweet At ‘Em All You Want, But Gen Y’s Are Still More Influenced By Word-of-Mouth Marketing

Word-of-Mouth-150.jpgA new report out from Sitel on social media and consumer trends implies that social media is key to reaching Gen Y (those born between 1980 and 2000), but the #s don’t add up.

While the Gen Y, or people born between 1980-2000, are in fact “digital natives,” that doesn’t mean they are actually most reachable via social media marketing.

When looking at which types of decisions influence purchase decisions for electronics, 46.9% of Gen Y’s are most influenced by in-store promotions, 44.3% by word-of-moth marketing and 39.8% by Internet advertising.

GenY-Media-Influence-SITEL.jpg

Only 28.7% were influenced by social media, which makes sense given the fact that you are what you’re more likely to be what you “like” on Facebook, not “what your friends like.”

When it comes to what types of media influence purchases of apparel/clothing and grocery, social media still comes in dead last not only for Gen Y’s, but for Gen X’s and Boomers, too.

New research from Ericsson echoes the fact that while teens today are definitely digital natives, they still prefer face-to-face communication over digital means like texting and Facebook.

Teenagers Want Face Time More Than Texting Time

teens-texting.jpegDespite all of the technology available to teenagers today, they still prefer meeting IRL to texting and “liking” each others’ Facebook statuses.

A new study out from Ericsson surveyed 2000 U.S. teenagers ages 13-17 to understand more about how they socialize through technology.

Texting and Facebook in particular have changed the way that teenagers date, particularly in the “courting” process which concludes with an actual date. The initial first interaction still takes place offline. In fact, when asked the question what type of communication would they miss most if it were taken away, teens responded with “face-to-face.”

According to the study, texting is teens’ second tool of choice when they can’t meet up in-person because it’s easy to do while multitasking. A study from Nielsen showed that teen girls text 1.5 times as much as teen boys.

Facebook came in a sad fourth place after texting and talking on the phone.

Teens see voice calls as better suited for adults. Google+ wasn’t mentioned in this report, but teens do say they’d abandon Facebook for it.

Another less-explored means of communication is video chat, which is mostly by 13- to 15-year-olds, who tend to have more restrictions than 16- to 19-year-olds. When teens video chat, they are often times doing something at the same time, including chores or homework.

When it comes to Facebook, teens see it more as an additional means of communication, and they tend to have far less friends on it than adults. Teens tend to only befriend people they already know, and have an average of 265 friends.

A recent study from Pew showed that 62% of teens on social media sites set their profile to private. Only 19% make their profile partially private, and a mere 17% left their profiles completely public.

Unlike adults, teenagers use Facebook as another means for expressing their emotions by posting song lyrics and movie quotes. There is no reason for this type of information to be public. For teens, Facebook is an extension of their real-life relationships. Adults use Facebook to take the place of forms of communication, using it more for exchanging information and less for friendships they have in real life.

Teenagers are also more likely to have regular mobile phones that smartphones. The 13-year-old age group is more interested in owning a smartphone than the 17-year-olds.
