Cartoon: Not My Type
Jan 8th
There’s a special appeal that Myers-Briggs personality types holds for folks in the online space. Maybe it’s because of the appeal of a simple yet exhaustive taxonomy that can capture the whole spectrum of human variation. Maybe it’s because you can quantify it, plot it on a graph and measure it against other people’s – kind of like Klout for your soul.
Or maybe because people can drop it into a Twitter bio, and reveal their inner selves in just four characters, which helpfully leaves room for the words “passionate about B2B marketing for rotor arm assemblies” along with that that quote that Gandhi apparently never said.
Whatever the reason, it at least suggests that in a world so often dominated by metrics and conversions, we’re still up for a little introspection. Especially if it leads to an embeddable web badge. I take comfort from that.
Happy new year, all.

Now You Can Type 60K+ Characters Into A Facebook Status Update
Dec 1st
The Facebook+Journalists Page announced that now everyone can write posts with 60,000 characters, making status updates feel more like the not-so-often used notes feature, which doesn’t appear at all in the Facebook Timeline-version at all.
The amount of characters one can write into a Facebook status update has been steadily increasing over the years, growing from 160 (how Twitter-like!) to 420, then to 500. In September, it reached 5,000. This new jump seems abrupt; the last big increase was 4,500 characters. This one is 55,000 characters, or 12 times as many characters as before.
The Facebook status has experienced a good deal of changes. In August 2010, Facebook started auto-suggesting Facebook pages, groups interest and even to other users in status updates. “Memorable Status Updates” began showing up earlier this year. It surfaced seemingly random old status updates in a user’s sidebar. Many users were uninterested in seeing these old statuses, and many reported seeing statuses that had been deleted.
Facebook hopes that the new, super-long status updates will encourage even more sharing, which will move users one step closer to complete lifestreaming. This new status update in conjunction with the imminent Timeline rollout make that even more plausible. Facebook, for one, sure does hope so.

New Type of Android Malware Spotted In the Wild
Jun 21st
According to mobile security company Lookout, there is a new version of Android malware in the wild and this one is a little bit different from what has come before.
Known as GGTracker, the application can be downloaded from the mobile browser through an advertisement that brings users to a page that is set up to look like the Android Market. Once a user has downloaded the GGTracker Tracker Trojan it sends SMS messages to premium subscription services that would normally require online registration.
The clever bit in this new malware is the fake Android Market installation screen. Yet, since it is not the actual Android Market, it is doubtful that Google can reach into users phones to automatically disable the Trojan, the way the company did with the DroidDream malware that struck earlier this year. We have contacted Lookout and Google to see if this is a possibility.
Once a user has clicked through to the fake installation page they are prompted to install and application, like a “fake battery optimizer package as t4t.pwower.management and in another a porn app packaged as com.space.sexypic,” according to Lookout. Once a user clicks on the download button, the malicious app will direct the user to install the app via Android’s download notification.
The app will then ping a server that will register the user to premium SMS subscription services that would normally involve answering questions or a PIN to register for. The app communicates with the malicious server without the users’ knowledge.
This malware looks a lot like something users would find on the Web as opposed to a mobile hack and signifies a new approach for malware makers in the mobile realm. It is always a good idea to have some type of security software on your Android device, such as Symantec or Lookout, both of which will scan any download a device makes to discern the intent of the application.

Google Brix: New Doc Type Discovered in Code
Apr 5th
Code for Google Docs now includes multiple references to a new type of document called Brix, long-time independent Google watchdog Alex Chitu of Google Operating System reports today. Chitu regularly spots new and experimental features in Google code, though many of them don’t end up launching formally.
There’s no information available about Brix other than that it appears to be a document type and has a Lego-style brick icon already posted online. Chitu hypothesizes that Brix is a type of interlocking, collaborative mutli-document metadocument. That makes sense to me.
Google Operating System found code in Google Docs in January that indicated the service would soon add a music player and playlist support, possibly for Presentation soundtracks. That hasn’t launched yet.
As part of today’s code discovery, the blog also discovered evidence that Docs could include support for Fusion Table documents and Google Sites.
When asked for comment, Andrew Kovacs, Senior Manager, Communications and Public Affairs at Google, replied “As you might expect we don’t have anything to share on the record.”
Brix may never see the light of day but if it is in fact a way to interlock multiple types of documents easily, like a set of Legos, that sounds great. I hope it does launch.
