Verizon Teams With Intuit to Bring GoPayment Mobile Card Reader to Retail Stores

Intuit_Gopayment_150x150.jpgVerizon Wireless and financial management company Intuit announced today a partnership that will bring Intuit’s mobile card reader to 2,300 Verizon retails stores across the country. The partnership is yet another big move in the mobile card reader industry that has been popularized by Square and includes Verifone, Erply and PayAnywhere among others.

Intuit operates QuickBooks, a system used by merchants to manage finances. As such, GoPayment fits well in Intuit’s product line. Verizon will be able to put the Go Payment in front of millions of people looking for mobile payment options. It is a win for both companies and a strike to Square, which is putting up a big fight against the large financial companies that are rapidly entering mobile payment industry.

Intuit_Verizon_GoPayment.jpgGoPayment can support BlackBerry, Android and iOS. It offers merchants the ability to create and sell from a list of frequently sold items and customize the receipts for sales tax, tips etc. Card data is not stored on the mobile device and is encrypted twice in the process, from the card reader itself and a second time from the GoPayment app.

The GoPayment card reader will be “free” to Verizon customers granted activation of a GoPayment account and a mail-in rebate of the $29.97 purchase price. The app itself is free and has no monthly transaction or cancellation fees with a 2.7% rate for each swiped transaction. A paid version of GoPayment is available that lowers the per swipe transaction rate to 1.7% with a $12.95 monthly fee, which will be good for retailers with high volume.

Square sells for $9.95 at the Apple Store but consumers get a $10 credit from the company when they sign up for an account. Square also has a 2.7% fee for swiped transactions.

Mobile Point-Of-Sale Growing Fast

Mobile point-of-sale is on its way to becoming a large industry. Intuit says that by 2015, mobile POS will process near $54.8 billion in transactions. Yet, with so many options are now on the market, what is the difference between them? Square has an iPad-based point of sale terminal that ostensibly beats out GoPayments and Verifone’s offerings. Yet, Intuit’s ability to easily integrate QuickBooks with GoPayment is a very useful feature as well (something that would probably not be hard for Square to replicate). The fees for swiped transactions are similar for all the major players in the market.

When Square announced its Card Case and Register in May it said that it had shipped 500,000 dongles and was processing $3 million in transactions per day. No word on how much GoPayment is processing per day at this time. Intuit is a leader in small business payments and processes near $17 billion in transactions over 300,000 merchants a year.

Microsoft Reveals Its Windows 8 Development Teams But Won’t Explain Them

Comcast Teams With Elemental Technologies to Stay Ahead of Netflix and Hulu

elementallogo150x150.jpgComcast is making its push against the over-the-top content distributors like Netflix and Hulu and today took another step towards evening the playing field by enlisting Elemental Technologies, a video processing company that specializes in sending content to tablets and smartphones.

It is an interesting move by Comcast and it is one of the first cable companies to meaningfully compete in the content market, as opposed to just being a “dumb pipe” operator. Comcast’s desire to be in the content business became apparent with its massive take over of NBC Universal that was approved last year. In terms of content monetization against the other operators like Verizon, AT&T or Time Warner, Comcast is now ahead of the curve.

Included in this partnership is video management and publishing company thePlatform. Elemental and thePlatform are working together to bring more than 10,000 hours of Comcast/NBC Universal content to Comcast’s XFinity application on iOS devices.

It is an interesting move by Comcast and not unexpected. NBC now has its own dedicated streaming application, just like ABC does with its ABC Player. The intrigue comes when you put the XFinity streaming app in context against Hulu Plus, which is reportedly looking to sell and has a number of possible suitors. Per its agreement with federal regulators when the NBC Universal takeover was granted, Comcast does not have a seat on Hulu’s board and has no say in decisions that happen at the company. It is unlikely that the Federal Trade Commission would allow Comcast to buy Hulu outright from the other network partners (Fox and ABC) so coming up with a robust streaming application of its own makes a lot of sense.

“Because of Hulu and Netflix, Comcast has been incredibly agile for a $60 billion company,” said Sam Blackman, CEO of Elemental.

Elemental_IPad.jpgFor its part, Elemental is a company on the rise. It has been developing its IP-streaming product for years and is gaining steam with the Era of the iPad. See the infographic to the right to see how closely correlated Elemental’s growth is to that of the iPad.

Instead of being a CPU-intensive video processor, Elemental is primarily GPU (graphic processor unit) in its video processing, which makes it a lot more scalable than competitors that rely on CPU. Its technology allows content to be streamed across almost any device and over almost any bit-rate, making it very versatile and flexible. With the rise of IP content-streaming devices (like an actual Apple TV or Internet connected TVs), Elemental is only going to keep growing.

Comcast is also a partner in the Digital Entertainment Content Ecosystem consortium that is developing UltraViolet, the digital rights management solution kicked off by the networks and studios. Elemental is not a partner in DECE but it is following UltraViolet closely and will be able to conform to the standards (Common File Format) that UltraViolet is creating.

The question for Comcast is whether or not users will flock to the XFinity app like they have with Hulu and Netflix or even the ABC Player or HBO Go. This type of application was precisely what Comcast had in mind when it rebranded Comcast cable and Internet service to XFinity several years ago.

American Express’ Digital Payments Platform Serve Teams with Sprint

American Express’ new digital payments and commerce platform Serve has just announced its first carrier deal since its launch in March of this year. The company’s new partnership with U.S. operator Sprint will allow Serve’s mobile wallet application to be made available in the Sprint Zone for customers using select Android phones.

Sponsor

Serve, which can be funded by a bank account, debit or credit card, or from another Serve account, does not require users to be American Express card holders. Instead, it’s aimed at those who don’t rely on credit cards. With Serve, customers can shop both online and offline, anywhere American Express is accepted. Serve can be used for either physical goods and services at local merchants, as well as online purchases. Sprint customers can even use Serve to pay their phone bill or to send money to friends, the company says.

Serve

In the future, Serve will also be used for redeeming offers on goods and services, too, by way of a Groupon-like program.

Currently, Serve supports both Android and iOS and is being developed for RIM’s BlackBerry and Microsoft’s Windows Phone mobile operating systems. On Sprint, Android phones will be supported expect for the Nexus S 4G and the Samsung Moment, which don’t offer the Sprint Zone application.

Serve Gaining Momentum

In April, American Express invested in mobile payment startup Payfone in order to combine Payfone’s mobile authorization and payment services with the Serve platform. This allows customers to pay for both digital and physical goods using just their phone number. The move was expected to help strengthen AmEx’s position outside the U.S., where Visa and MasterCard typically dominate.

Payfone is unique in that it leverages the security built into mobile operator networks, like Sprint’s, to aid in payment authorizations. With Payfone, the customer’s SIM card, device ID and location are tied to each customer’s account, which helps to cut down on fraud.

Later this summer, American Express announced a partnership with Patch, AOL’s hyperlocal news and content outlet. Serve will power the Patch Deals platform, a Groupon-style discounts program with local merchants on the AmEx network.

With this partnership, deals could be loaded onto customers’ American Express cards, allowing them to take part in the discount without printing out physical coupons. Serve customers, too, will have the same option – and will be able to use their phone to redeem offers at local merchants on AmEx’s network in the future.

All this adds up to a quickly growing digital payments platform from American Express, but it will not be without its challengers. Visa, too, has its own plans for digital payments, and will be launching its platform this fall. There’s also competition on the mobile wallet front from Google, via its Google Wallet service, and from the operators themselves with Isis, a coalition between AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon.

Google Teams with GigaPan to Show Off Chrome’s HTML 5 Features

While the official word from W3C is that HTML 5 won’t be the standard for another couple of years, we’re already seeing the implementation of HTML 5 in both modern web browsers and new site features. This includes straightforward extras like Google Instant, but it has also opened the door for entirely new forms of applications on the web. From WebGL’s in-browser 3D acceleration to the myriad of game apps, there’s plenty more to explore – assuming you have a browser capable of handling this new level of coding. To demonstrate just how capable the Chrome browser is of doing just that, Google has teamed with the panoramic image company GigaPan.

GigaPan has already been alive, well, and recognized in the market as a panoramic image service that can be used directly through your web browser. Now the company is setting itself apart with a feature called “Time Machine.” Time Machine, on the surface, looks like a time lapse photo viewer with some extra controls (speed up, slow down, skip ahead, skip back, and so on). What differentiates Time Machine, though, is that users can zoom in – and have the video display maximum detail on every portion of the photo.

To do this, the videos take advantage of HTML 5′s video tag feature – along with the required acceleration and support from modern browsers like Chrome – to create new videos out of the zoomed area, transitioning to the freshly created video seamlessly. The project demonstrates how effectively HTML 5 can be used for new concepts of how media is displayed, for personal or scientific reasons. Time Machine can be found on the official GigaPan site, or on Chrome Experiments where the project is being highlighted by Google as an apt example of what the modern web can do.
