PentOS “Just Add Water” Private Cloud Released, Dell Signs On as Partner

Thumbnail image for OpenStack logoThe creator of the Piston Enterprise Operating System, or PentOS, was lauded for his contributions in helping to create cloud computing itself, through the pioneering NASA Nebula project. There, NASA first demonstrated how to fit a data center cluster in an ordinary shipping container, proving the space program can still produce benefits today.

But last year, Joshua McKenty one-upped himself. He fit an almost entirely self-provisioning cloud operating system for a common rack of servers, onto a USB thumb drive. You plug the thumb device into a PC, edit maybe three lines of a text configuration file, save it, unplug it, plug it into the main server in the rack, and turn it on.

In a very clever demonstration video (above), McKenty demonstrates what I call the “Just Add Water” nature of the configuration process. On Wednesday, Piston Cloud’s PentOS – the first commercial implementation of OpenStack, born from NASA Nebula – emerged from public beta into general availability. In addition came news that Dell has signed on as a provider of Piston Cloud-certified hardware. (I remember the hoops Dell’s predecessor, PCs Limited, had to jump through to become DOS-certified.)

On the first birthday of Piston Cloud’s existence, in an effort to share news as to the progress of its efforts toward the goal of world domination, company officials have provided via Twitter this detailed glimpse of its own progress chart, shown here as originally depicted through the medium of frosting.

Foursquare’s Push API to Be Released Publicly Today

foursquare-icon-mobile.pngFoursquare’s Push API, which the company first unvieled to developers in February, will be publicly released sometime this afternoon, according to a post on BetaBeat.

Select developers have had access to the API since the company’s last hackathon and have been using it to build applications that take advantage of the Foursquare’s push notifications. The API will go into a public beta just a few days before the company’s global hackathon on Saturday.

So what kind of uses will this API have? BetaBeat’s Adrianne Jeffries describes it as a “magical tool that will allow developers to build apps that can remind you to buy milk when you walk past the grocery store.”

A more specific example would be 4sqtransit, a service that sends up-to-date public transit schedule information to people when they check into a transit stop. It works by pairing a Foursquare user’s check-in with data about transit stops and schedules from another database. Depending on their location, it sends a text message to the user containing the next few departure times.

4sqtransit creator Matt McCormick explains in further detail:

When a user checks in on Foursquare, I receive a notification from the Foursquare Push API that the user has checked in, with details about which of my users checked in and where they checked in at. My service then matches this Foursquare user to the user in my database to determine which transit agency they use, which they specified when they signed up for my application. I then query that transit agency for the nearest transit stop, based on the GPS coordinates of the user’s check in location from Foursquare, and calculate the distance from the user to the transit stop. If the stop is within 100 meters of the user’s check in location, then I move forward and deliver the stop times, otherwise I ignore the check in. To deliver stop times, I again query the user’s transit agency for the stop times in the next 2 hours and send this information to the user by text message, using Twilio.

Pretty neat. It should be interesting to see how this API is used once it’s available to a wider group of developers. For samples and documentation, check out its listing on Github.

iPad 3 to Be Released Next Year, Retina Display and All

The third iteration of Apple’s hot-selling tablet computer will not be on the market until 2012, the Wall Street Journal has confirmed.

Rumors of a 2011 release for the device were already in the process of being quashed by various sources when the WSJ’s Lorraine Luk reported that the company is aiming for an early 2012 launch, according to the reporter’s sources and information about recent orders placed by Apple for components like chips and display panels.

The new device is expected to have a high-resolution “retina display” akin to the one that shipped with the iPhone 4 last year. The iPad 3′s screen resolution will be 2048×1536, an improvement over the 1024×768 display that shipped with the iPad 2. The screen is the same size of previous iPads, which should quiet any speculation about Apple producing a smaller tablet.

The company wouldn’t confirm or deny the reports, which came from contacts at some of Apple’s suppliers based in Taiwan and China. The report also indicated Apple plans on begin testing the device in the Fall, which is when it was originally targeted to be released.

Rumors about the iPad 3 being released in Fall 2011 – which would have been just six months after the last release – began swirling before the iPad 2 even came out.

So what else will the iPad 3 include? Very little has been confirmed by anyone, least of all Apple. A faster processor is a safe bet. Obviously, all of the improvements of iOS 5 will have been available for a few months by that point, and Apple will likely be pushing out yet another upgrade to their mobile operating system by the time the iPad 3 hits.
