Big Question (Answered): “What Do You Think of Google’s New Google Bar?”

big-question-150.pngGoogle has been iterating on their nav bar in recent months, quite frequently. As Jon Mitchell points out, the newest version of the nav bar replaces the gray bar that was released in November. The gray bar replaced a black bar released mid-2011.

This new hybrid bar appears to some, though others will still see the gray bar. If you haven’t seen it yet, check out the screenshots of the hybrid Google nav bar. Do you like it? Is it easier to use or were you just getting used to the previous iteration?

Big Question (Answered): “Do You Have Too Many Facebook Friends?”

big-question-150.pngEvery day I jump onto Facebook for my work, but honestly, I never use it as it was intended. If you send me a message or like my status, I might engage, but I never reach out to folks. My stream is full of interesting content about people I don’t know enough to care about. I know that sounds rude, but there’s really only so much room in your life for connections. I have a little over 700 friends and I think that’s about 500 too many.

I’ve been considering paring down for some time, not because I think my connections aren’t cool, but because I’m missing out on things like my family’s birthday notifications and friends’ graduations. Not long ago I found out that one of my best friends had a son who was having brain surgery. Apparently he’d had a condition for some time, but I’d never seen her mention it because I have too many connections.

Alicia Eler wrote about the overload of Facebook friends today, and she noted that many of us are seeing Facebook become something different than what it was intended to be. In some ways, the changes are quite interesting, but not helpful if you want to be able to see important items from close friends and family.

Big Question (Answered): “Can Online Petitions Change Foxconn Conditions?”

big-question-150.pngThe conditions of workers at Foxconn have been the subject of discussion for the past few years, but lately more and more people seem to be interested in how the workers at the tech manufacturing giant fare. A petition asks for your signature to pressure Apple into “mak(ing) the iPhone 5 ethically.”

But can an online petition really make a difference in this situation? Apple is not the only company who uses Foxconn to supply their hardware manufacturing. Amazon, Microsoft and Sony also use Foxconn to manufacture the Kindle, Xbox 360 and the PS3, among others. John Paul Titlow goes into further detail in, “Why Petitions Won’t Change Apple’s Labor Practices Anytime Soon.”

Big Question (Answered): “What Does the Facebook IPO Mean To You?”

big-question-150.pngMany people are expecting Facebook to file for it’s initial public offering today. In what could be the biggest tech IPO in history, Facebook would be aiming for a $75-100 billion valuation. They are looking to raise $10 billion in stock.

Facebook is expected to go public under the symbol “FB,” but it’s unclear whether they will list on the NYSE or the NASDAQ. With $3.8 billion in ad revenues in 2011, Facebook is on a roll. But what does that mean to the typical Facebook user?

Big Question (Answered): “Do You Chat on Social Networks?”

big-question-150.pngWhen I’m on Facebook and a chat pops up, I typically curse and close the browser immediately or quickly attempt to find the “invisible” setting. It’s not that I don’t like my friends, if I am on the computer I am probably working. If I want to socialize I may send out a Tweet or a text message, which they can respond to at their leisure.

I asked the staff and they agreed. I could find no staffer that admitted to chatting on a social network willingly, though one did say he occasionally feels he must.

Do you use the chat feature on social networks?

Big Question (Answered): “Worst Excel Spreadsheet”

big-question-150.pngMany of us are still haunted by our colleagues’ Excel dependence. Even though I remembered the ghastly spreadsheet’s I’ve been sent, I didn’t expect to see as many truly horrible ways to use Excel as you have shared. Clearly someone needs to teach folks how to use a spreadsheet. From dropping images in it and sending it via email to creating a blog wireframe using Excel borders and shading, your answers had us all giggling.

What is the worst use of an Excel spreadsheet that you have seen?

To Centralize Or Decentralize SEM – That’s The Question

Big Question (Answered): “Hey girl… What’s Your Favorite Riff of the Ryan Gosling Memes?”

big-question-150.pngRyan Gosling is the focus so many memes lately… From well-educated preservationist to staunch feminist, from NPR junkie to Silicon Valley power player, these Tumblr memes have made us all giggle. Which is a good thing because we all need to laugh with a potential SOPA crisis on our hands. But, don’t worry, Ryan is all over that.

So far my favorite iteration of “Hey girl…” comes from a Tumblr that imagines Ryan is a crafter, or in love with one. HandmadeRyanGosling pokes gentle fun at crafters, and the folks who love them, as only a fellow crafter could.
