Android Market Hits 500,000 Successful Published Apps, Has 37% Removal Rate

In terms of pure volume, the Android Market is rapidly catching up with the Apple App Store. Android has also been a step behind Apple. The iPhone was released in 2007, Android made its mass market debut in 2008. Apple just released iOS 5 while Android just put out version 4.0. From the application perspective, Apple has long maintained a large lead.

Mobile research firm Research2Guidance said in August that the Android Market would catch the App Store by the end of 2011. Today it released its September 2011 numbers to show that the Market has achieved half a million successful app submissions, compared to near 600,000 for Apple. Yet, even though an app has been published, that does not mean it stays in the store forever. Apple still has the advantage in application churn rate over Android.

As of the end of the third quarter 2011, the Android Market had 319,161 active applications as compared to 459,589 for the Apple App Store. The churn rate, or applications that have been removed from an app store, was significantly higher for Android at 37% as compared to 24% for the App Store. Research2Guidance added the Windows Phone Marketplace into its study, showing a 13% churn rate.

Over 78% of the apps removed from the Android Market were free, which Research2Guidance believes is a product of the open ecosystem of the market where Android publishers have more apps in the market for testing, demos, trials and malware.

Apps die. It is a reality of the nature of development and lifecycles. There are a variety of reasons for this. Many times it is because an app does not support new versions of the operating system it is built on. For instance, there will likely be a large churn rate for older Android applications that do not end up supporting Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. The same goes for developers who have not taken the time to update their apps for functionality to iOS 5.

Apps are also removed because the code degenerates and are not updated to fix bugs. Or, instead of updating a version of an app, publishers will just publish the next version as its own app and disregard maintenance for the older version. For the Android Market, malware is also a factor in removal that, as we have seen, has not been a problem on iOS.

Research2Guidance notes that the Windows Phone Marketplace is on a similar trajectory to Android in terms of removal rates. After 15 months, the 13% churn is comparable to Android at 14% after the same period of time. The firm notes that the cleanup of the Android Market did not come until well after that, near the end of 2010.

In a Bold Move Towards Accountability, Road Casualty Data Published Online in UK

ukmap-1.jpgThe UK government has published 5 years of nation-wide road safety and casualty data freely online on a map that anyone can view in a web browser. It’s a remarkable instance of data-driven public accountability; presumably citizens will use this newly accessible data to apply pressure on government agencies regarding safety improvements. Citizens and researchers will also be able to cross-reference the location of troubled roadways with race and class demographic analysis to illuminate any inequitable allocation of infrastructure resources. It’s a bold and enabling action to take online.

The statistics were gathered by independent researchers and put online using eSpatial OnDemand GIS and Open Street Map. Open Street Map is like the Wikipedia of world and local maps, but it’s also a popular data platform that many other applications make use of. Map nerds should watch the OpenStreetMap annual conference, State of the Map, for more exciting map and geodata news. The conference opened this morning in Denver, Colorado.

Geodata industry writer Matt Ball published an eloquent, in-depth explanation this morning of how the geo industry is moving away from domination by legacy commercial software providers and toward a future where extensive value and opportunities are created by open source and open data communities working together on the web.

1 Million Teacher & Student Blogs Now Published on Edublogs.org

edublogslogo.jpgAustralian educational blogging platform EduBlogs announced this week that it now hosts more than 1 million blogs published by teachers and students. The six year old, 15 person company offers free blogs, paid blogs and campus-based blog networks. It’s all built on top of WordPress and parent company IncSub says Edublogs is the second most-popular WordPress site online. (Presumably after WordPress.com.)

Edublogs celebrated hosting 100,000 blogs in the Fall of 2007. The growth of blogging in education is an important development.

Two weeks ago, wikis and mapping integration were launched on the platform.

Edublogs used to offer a video hosting alternative to YouTube called Edublogs.tv as well, but took that site offline a year ago this month. The company said it would return but so far it hasn’t.

That blog reading and writing has proliferated throughout the world of education is no doubt a boon to the efforts of educators. By helping teachers supplement classroom instruction, compare notes with peers and communicate online with students learning to express themselves in newly accessible public fora – education blogging is one of the best examples of meaningful application of a technology so often derided as shallow and of little importance just a few short years ago when organizations like Edublogs.org launched.

Global Domination: CNN iReport Has Now Published From Every Country on Earth

cnn ireport.gifIt’s no Pambazuka News, but CNN’s four-year-old citizen journalism site iReport, does have a fairly high profile. Attached as it is to the pioneer in 24 hour cable news channels with a global reach, it shouldn’t surprise that it also has a global reach.

As of two days ago, iReports had been filed from every single country in the world except one. Nauru. Neither Nauruan nor visitor had ever sent in a story or photo or video from that South Pacific nation.

On a blog post, the iReport team pleads with the inhabitants of the island to help them complete their “Global Challenge.”

“Only Nauru is left! We want to hear from citizens of, or visitors to, this tiny island in the South Pacific, halfway between Australia and Hawaii. Send us a snapshot of life in Nauru — the local culture, food, architecture, natural sites, or an unusual event happening there.”

nauru.jpgToday, Nauru came through. San Franciscan Lee Miller dropped some shots he had taken during a 2008 trip the country.

The value of leveraging readers as reporters is their distribution on-site all around the world. How many people would have known about Nauru without both the curiosity of Miller and the muscle of CNN?

“‘It’s a really sad story because it wasn’t that long ago that Nauruans were driving around in Ferraris. … It used to be one of the richest countries in the world,’ Miller said.

But there was a lot more about the country waiting to be seen. Miller recalled “breathtaking scenery” and touching moments with locals. The owner of the island’s only hotel noticed him wearing a Barack Obama T-shirt and insisted on paying for the rest of his stay. Another time, when he got sick, a Nauruan bus driver who worked at the hotel took him to a store and bought him medicine.”

Citizen journalism grew in tandem with the growth of blogging and other social media tools. There has been a lot of shaking-out in the past few years as it’s veered from a curiosity to the salvation of journalism to a point of fact. To be able to say, “Tell me what you see!” and get an answer is the real fruit of citizen journalism.

From iReports to companies like Demotix, Now Public and AllVoices to blogs and Facebook pages, it looks like that dynamic has found roots in our experience of news.

In counting the world’s countries, CNN has used the U.S. State Department’s list of independent countries. This list has 194 countries, of which iReports have been filed from 193.
