Google Provides New Interactive Mobile Data Tool

OurMobilePlanet Smarphone Data

With mobile Internet usage increasing, the need for quality data related to how consumers interact with and user their smartphones is more important now than ever before. Until recently, quality data related to mobile usage has been difficult to find, cost prohibitive, and often inaccurate. However, last evening Google rolled out a data resource site named OurMobilePlanet, which provides free access to a massive amount of data.

Nicole, Leverich, a member of the Google Mobile Ads Marketing Team said the following regarding the new site:

“We commissioned this survey and have made the data available for free because we believe the shift to mobile is so fundamental that we need to do everything we can to help businesses adapt immediately.”

The data, which is from the “Global Mobile Research: The Smartphone User & the Mobile Marketer” study, was collected between March and July of this year. Google conducted the study alongside Ipsos and in collaboration with the Mobile Marketing Association.

OurMobilePlanet provides an interactive tool that enables businesses and individuals to quickly perform research and create data-driven graphs. Some of the data that can be quickly accessed and presented in a graphical format includes:

  • Penetration – consumer adoption of smartphones in a given market
  • Behavior – why and how consumers are using mobile devices
  • Activities – what consumers are doing on smartphones
  • Commerce – how consumers spend money on mobile devices
  • Advertisement – how consumers are engaging with mobile ads

Businesses can now use this interactive tool to access data and strengthen their understanding of how mobile usage relates to their industry. As a result of this better understanding, businesses can incorporate data analysis into their decisions related to mobile strategy and advertising.

Facebook’s Open Graph Provides Marketers with New Opportunities

Facebook Open Graph AdsAt the recent Facebook f8 developer conference, Facebook unveiled two new features: Timeline and Open Graph. Timeline, which is replacing the current profile pages, will highlight important photos, events, and activities. Open Graph, which will usher in a new era of apps, will enable Facebook users to easily share experiences together in realtime. Although Facebook will undoubtedly claim that these changes were primarily made to provide a better user experience, the higher levels of engagement and better data will result in revenue growth.

With the introduction of Open Graph and lifestreaming, Facebook users will be able to instantly share activities with their friends without being required to grant apps permission each time. As a result, Facebook users will be sharing more data with friends, Facebook, and marketing companies than ever before. With the help of Graph Targeting and the better dataset, marketers will be able to deliver specific marketing messages to the optimum target market.

Until now, marketers had to rely on Facebook users either checking in at a location or clicking “Like” in order to create a “Sponsored Story.” The Open Graph will now provide advertisers with many more opportunities to create Sponsored Stories through a variety of actions including: online purchases, playing a song, or watching a movie. Sponsored Stories, which convert at much higher rates than traditional internet advertising, place a friend’s endorsement on a product or service.

Gokul Rajaram, Facebook’s product director for ads, said the following regarding Facebook’s ads:

“Marketing on Facebook is all about social discovery, which is how you learn things from your friends.”

Although the new advertising options are exciting for internet marketers, these options will require a change of marketing strategy. In the past, most marketers simply encouraged Facebook users to “Like” a brand. Now, marketers will have to facilitate the “social discovery” of brands using the new data and compelling advertisements that introduce the social aspect of advertising.

In addition to the new features and partnerships, Facebook announced they now have over 800 million active users. This number, along with the recently developed features, should help Facebook exceed the $3.8 billion of projected revenue for 2011.

Foursquare Security Concern Addressed: Social Network Provides Privacy Option

Foursquare home privacy

On Monday evening, Foursquare, a location-based social network, announced a new privacy option that will allow users to hide home addresses from strangers. When a Foursquare user applies the “home” category to a venue, the home’s location will be hidden from everyone other than the user’s friends.

Prior to the introduction of this new privacy option, Foursquare’s GPS-enabled network would display your exact home address on your profile as well as a pushpin location on a map. Although some concerned users created a Foursquare “home” location away from their actual physical home, advanced Foursquare users could still easily identify the true home by analyzing the checkin patterns (blue dots). For safety reasons, it is advisable that Foursquare users enable this new feature immediately.

To enable this new privacy option, create your home as a venue and categorize it as “Home.” Once you have created your home as a venue, you can easily edit or delete the home from the Foursquare database. If a home venue already exists that you did not create, click “report a problem” on the home venue page. After selecting this option, you will be able to make your home private, delete the home from Foursquare, or claim a home that is currently categorized incorrectly.

Concerning this new option, the Foursquare support entry states the following:

“To make sure your home venue is private to you and your friends, choose Home as the venue’s primary category. Doing this will ensure that only you and your friends can see the address on the venue page; everyone else sees a zoomed out map with no map pin (rather than the real location).”

While the new privacy updates will be greatly appreciated by the Foursquare community, many Foursquare users feel that this basic security and privacy option is long overdue.
