Microsoft Will Launch Kinect For Workplace Next Month

shutterstock_microsoft_kinect.jpgMicrosoft wants its popular Kinect to be a game changer for more than just video games.

The company plans to introduce the first version of Kinect authorized for use in the workplace next month. The product will be marketed through its Microsoft Dynamics division, which develops enterprise resource planning and customer relationship management (CRM) software applications.

The work place version of its motion-detecting input system for Xbox 360 will have a wide range of uses in several different industries, according to Microsoft Business Solutions Technical Fellow Mike Ehrenberg and Microsoft Dynamics General Manager Fred Studer. The two mentioned the commercial version of Kinect during an interview Thursday, that was granted as a sneak peak of the company’s Convergence 2012 conference in Houston in March.

Ehrenberg outlined a scenario where workers on a warehouse floor or in a manufacturing plant are wearing safety gloves that make it difficult for them to operate computers and other systems that may be used to track inventory or confirm that certain steps in the manufacturing process are complete. Kinect’s motion-detection technology, he said, could be adapted to allow accurate input through a gesture which does not require glove removal.

“Or what about food service? You’ve been in the store where the worker wearing gloves makes your sandwich, then has to remove the gloves to operate the cash register,” he said. “We all see a lot of things in the workplace that don’t make a lot of sense and can be improved.”

The original Kinect was released on Nov. 4, 2010 and after selling 8 million units in 60 days, the Guinness Book of World Records named it the fastest selling consumer electronics device in history.

“We mention it to companies and they think ‘Why? It’s a toy’,” Ehrenberg said. “But it doesn’t take us long to show them it has a place in the workplace.”

Top Indie Authors Earn Thousands in First Month of Kindle Lending

amazonkindle150.jpgAmazon reports today that the Kindle E-Book Lending Library now offers over 75,000 books, boosted by the launch of the Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) Select program for independent publishers. The KDP Select program launched in December, and Kindle customers borrowed 295,000 KDP Select titles that month. The top authors in the program earned thousands of dollars on top of their regular monthly sales.

Amazon increased its monthly funding for KDP Select from $500,000 to $700,000 this month after the strong showing. KDP authors earned $1.70 per borrow. The top 10 KDP Select authors saw a 30% increase from lending on top of the royalties they earned from sales of the same titles. Amazon’s end-run around Big Publishing shows promise for authors.

Amazon says that total sales of titles in the KDP Select lending program grew faster than KDP titles that aren’t in the lending program, but they don’t say how much. But the $200,000 bonus to the KDP Select fund is a signal of optimism. The fund is divided between the authors each month depending on their percentage of total books borrowed. One author, Carolyn McCray, earned $8,250 from the fund in December.

The Kindle Lending Library itself launched on November 2. It’s available to Amazon Prime members. It has tight restrictions – users can only borrow one book per month – so 295,000 titles in one month means 295,000 people.

For authors in the KDP Select lending program, the numbers are great, but Amazon is characteristically cagey about other specifics. It won’t share the exact size of the sales bump KDP Select authors got over non-lending KDP authors. It doesn’t disclose how many books were lent in the Lending Library program overall.

The biggest bugbear of them all for Amazon reporters is the specific number of Kindles sold. Amazon will report percentage growth in Kindle sales, but they never disclose exactly how many devices are in people’s hands. Still, we know this: 295,000 or so people borrowed Kindle books from independent authors last month, and some of those authors made lots of money.

Do you have an e-reader? Which one? Do you read on it often?

How To Win National Novel Writing Month Using Google Docs

nanowrimo_2011_150.jpgTomorrow marks day one of National Novel Writing Month, a 30-day, Web-enhanced festival of writing in which thousands of people force themselves (and encourage each other) to finally write that novel they’ve always had in the back of their brain. The NaNoWriMo website gives participants analytics to track the goal of writing 50,000 words in 30 days, and anyone who finishes is a winner.

We’re longtime fans of NaNoWriMo here at RWW. Editor-in-Chief Richard MacManus documented his NaNoWriMo experience back in 2003, at the dawn of our site, and we checked back in after NaNoWriMo 2008 for its 10th anniversary. With the fun starting tomorrow (surprise!), Google Docs has offered some tips about how its free, cloud-based document suite can help us all win at NaNoWriMo.

Google Docs is just one of many tools we can use to crank out our 50,000. I also highly recommend Scrivener, a desktop application from Literature & Latte that gives writers everything they need to work without distractions and stay organized. Scrivener is also a steadfast supporter of NaNoWriMo.

But the ability to work from anywhere without worry is a huge bonus for Google Docs. Any effort to use the Web to encourage more creative writing is all right by us, so we’re glad to pass along our take on how Google Docs can help us all write a novel this month.

Write While You’re On The Go

If you have a smartphone or tablet, you can write your novel from anywhere by visiting docs.google.com in your mobile browser. Here’s how it works:

Android users also got a handsome update to their native Google Docs app, but iOS users can get their words in using the mobile site. Remember, every word counts, so even if it’s just a sentence that pops into your head at the supermarket, it’s vital to write it down.

googdoc_fusion_tables.jpegTrack Your Progress and Manage Versions

Google Docs lists a revision history of your document on the right-hand side. This will help you keep track of the work you’ve done each day, and if you end up regretting some huge rewrite, you can always step back.

But try not to do too much of that; the key to winning NaNoWriMo is to stop editing yourself and just keep moving the cursor to the right (or the left, if your language swings that way).

Make It Visual

googdocs_dragimages-1.png

No, pictures don’t count towards your 50,000 words, but sometimes you’ve got to illustrate, and Google Docs makes it easy. It added some new features last month, like drag-and-drop images, that make visually sprucing up your novel a snap. Another new feature is format painter, which helps quickly change the style of highlighted text, useful for working on your story’s formatting.

Just Write It.

Of course, the only way to write your novel is to do it, so don’t spend too long tweaking your settings. Keep making the clackity noise on your keyboard, and you’ll get to 50,000 this month. Don’t worry. It’s so worth it.

Learn more about National Novel Writing Month at NaNoWriMo.org, and sign up to start writing your novel! You can also follow @NaNoWriMo on Twitter and commiserate with all the other slogging writers using the hashtag #NaNoWriMo.

Report: Nearly Half Of Tablet Owners Made Purchases on Their Devices Last Month

ipad150150.jpegIn September 2011, a whopping 48% of tablet owners made a purchase on their tablet while 52% did not, according to a recent comScore whitepaper report called Digital Omnivores: How Tablets, Smartphones and Connected Devices are Changing U.S. Digital Media Consumption Habits. This is part of a growing trend in tablet usage, ignited by the launch of Apple’s iPad in January 2010.

Of those who did use their tablet to make a purchase, it’s notable that they fully used their tablets to do everything, from product and store research and price comparisons to the final transaction.

From this chart, it appears as if the devoted tablet users are using their devices for all their shopping activities, whereas the less-frequent tablet users will casually use their devices for shopping.

Comscore-Tablet-shopping-1.png

The same held true for tablet users who perused coupons and daily deals on their devices.

Comscore-Tablet-Shopping-2.png

This data isn’t very surprising considering Forrester’s prediction earlier this year that one-third of U.S. consumers will be tablet users by 2015. With Amazon’s release of the Kindle Fire tablet at the end of September, we can only predict tablet popularity continuing to grow.
