Report: FBI Arrests Members of Hacktivist Group Anonymous in Nationwide Crackdown

The Federal Bureau of Investigation has raided the homes of over a dozen alleged “hacktivists” associated with Anonymous in New York, New Jersey, Florida and California this morning, according to Fox News. The main Anonymous Twitter accounts, the group’s primary mode of communication with the world, have been silent but a correlated account @ThaiAnonymous has weighed in on the raids.
“It doesnt matter how many people the ‘FBI’ arrest.. wether they are core members or not.. #anonymous have started something unstoppable.”
Anonymous and related hacker group LulzSec have angered governments across the United States and Europse in recent weeks with an “AntiSec” campaign designed to attack government agencies and contractors. It was just a matter of time before the FBI tracked some members down.

The three homes in New York were located in Long Island, Brooklyn and Baldwin. The Baldwin home allegedly belongs to Giordani Jordan where police spent nearly two hours searching and confiscating computers and electronic accessories, according to Fox News. All suspects are in their late teens to late 20s.
The raids follow an arrest made by Scotland Yard in England last month of 19-year-old Ryan Cleary accused of launching distributed denial of service attacks (DDoS) on British agencies. LulzSec admitted that he was associated with the group in a very limited way though was not considered a full member.
Anonymous has claimed responsibility or been implicated in criminal hacking or DDoS attacks on the Central Intelligence Agency, Lockheed Martin, Booz Allen Hamilton, the state of Arizona, Visa, Mastercard, PayPal and others.
It appears that one of the leaders of Anonymous that goes by the codename of Sabu was not included in the arrests as he just tweeted a YouTube video by Anonymous member/sympathizer @Beast1333 that is a mashup of hip hop music and TV news announcers.

StatusNet Launching New SaaS – Stops Accepting New Members for Year Old Service

StatusNet announced this morning that it will unveil a new service and is deferring accepting new members on StatusNet Cloud Service, the offering it launched last year.
StatusNet Cloud Service launched last March with personal, community and private plans that were offered as a SaaS. Initial customers included Motorola Corporation and Canonical Ltd.
StatusNet OnDemand is the new service that the company is launching. No date is set. It will be focused on businesses and organizations and is designed for companies to create enterprise networks and connect with colleagues.

This is a definite repositioning of a service that is barely a year old. In a blog post, Founder Evan Prodromou says that 45,000 sites were built in the past year for StatusNet Cloud Service. From experience, I know most of these kinds of sites on networks such as these go unused. They are like those abandoned wikis that wilt when not updated. That’s true of sites that get abandoned on a blog network, too.
New users may sign up for a sneak-peek invitation to StatusNet OnDemand when it releases. StatusNet Cloud Service sites will remain active and supported. Sites do not have to be moved. People may also choose to manage StatusNet themselves by downloading and putting it on a hosting service.
Prodromou says the change means the following:
- Those without a private site on the StatusNet cloud will be invited to try the StatusNet OnDemand product at launch time.
- The logo, branding, and navigation have changed on the StatusNet site to reflect the new theme of the upcoming StatusNet 1.0.
- The website is being simplified to help people better understand what StatusNet on Demand is supposed to do.
StatusNet is a really smart group of people. If you did not know, identi.ca is the foundation for the open source microblogging service. It was one of the first services to emerge as a focal player in the movement around the real-time Web.
But its strength today is questionable. Identi.ca is under the radar and now StatusNet Cloud Service is not accepting new members. We’ll be watching to see if these guys can get things together and deliver on the promise that the team has.

Data Hacker Pageranks Members of the US Congress

What’s the fastest way to evaluate the true behavior of a Senator or Representative in Congress? How about through a ready-made mathematical model and some charts? That’s what Josh Tauberer has created as the latest project at congress-tracking site GovTrack.us. (Numerical methods for determining leadership and ideology in Congress)
“Bulk access to legislative information makes large-scale statistical analyses possible,” Tauberer writes. He’s performed analyses he says are like Google’s Pagerank, but for politicians: he’s tracked which politicians vote together in order to discover moderates and extremists, and he’s treated sponsorship and co-sponsorship of legislation like an endorsement of leadership, similar to the way Google treats links between web pages as an endorsement. The resulting chart, below, tracks Senate members on axis of leadership and ideology. It’s a fascinating way to see important qualitative matters quantified and to get a quick snapshot of politicians you might not follow very closely. Something like this could also be helpful in assessing claims and pushing for accountability of elected officials.

One interesting thing that sticks out to me: Joe Lieberman may be best known for taking conservative positions that drive many of his fellow-Democrats crazy – but day in and day out, he votes with them more than a number of other party-mates. As he has said, though: “I agree more often than not with Democrats on domestic policy. I agree more often than not with Republicans on foreign and defense policy.”
This kind of “birds of a feather flock together” statistical analysis reminds me of the fabulous, now two year-old, project Memeorandum Colors. That Firefox extension used similar math to help color code political blogs for rapid display of their partisan orientation.
I sure hope we’ll see a lot more work like this being done in the future. The instrumentation, or making data-enabled, of a wide variety of experiences in public and private life promises to serve as a foundation for new levels of social and self awareness and the creation of innovative new services.
