Facebook Posts Only Live For 3 Hours
Jan 24th
It happens to me every time.
I copy and paste it, log-in to Facebook and drop it in. I hit “Post.” The link, image or whatever it is publishes. I wait a few moments, then scurry back to the news feed and eventually sign off. I come back later, waiting to see what my post has done on Facebook. How long will it live, and is it going to get many likes or comments?
Sound familiar?
A new study from Edgerank Checker suggests that the average lifetime for a Facebook Page post is only three hours. A post is considered “dead” when its engagement is less than 10% of the largest growth of engagement between hourly snapshots.

Posts are usually “alive” when they’re in the Facebook news feed. If they’re labeled as a “highlighted story,” the posts receive even more interaction.
This data only applies to Facebook Page posts, however. Edgerank examined the lifespan of posts from individual Facebook pages, and found strikingly different results. Some posts on individual pages stayed “alive” for 10 hours, while others only lived for 15 minutes.
For this study, Edgerank collected data from December 2011 across 500+ pages and more than 30,000 individual posts.

Search Rankings are Dead: Long Live Search Placements
Jan 19th
It’s a new year. Somebody needs to declare something dead. Recently, I gave a presentation on Google’s Search+ in which I said ranking reports no longer matter because there is no such thing as consistent Google rankings. What you see in the Google search results and what I see, for the exact same…

Berlin Theatre Stages 1st Live Facebook Production
Jan 12th
On Monday, Maxim Gorki Theater in Berlin staged the first production of a play live on Facebook. The play was a stage adaptation of the novel “Effi Briest” by Theodor Fontaine.
According to Reuters, the online production, Effi Briest 2.0, “used status updates, photo uploads and wall postings from characters to relate protagonist Effi Briest’s descent into disrepute.” The Facebook experiment was a way to do a spectacularly different pre-dress dress rehearsal prior to the play’s in-the-flesh opening this Saturday.
Over 1,200 people signed up to participate on the production’s Facebook page before the virtual doors closed. Those arriving afterward were able to watch the live play but not contribute.
Participants were asked to help with certain aspects of the play, which chronicled the expectations and downfall of the eponymous heroine. They voted, for instance, on her wedding dress and added passages to her love letter. When they chattered too much during the production, the moderator, Theo Von Tain, asked for “silence in the theatre.” The audience applauded by typing the word “applause.”
A theatre spokesperson told Reuters:
“We were really pleased to try something new and innovative, and have learned a lot about how we can use the internet for our productions.
“We had a large group of people watching and they joined in as we thought they would. They were really attentive but also well-behaved and were quiet when we asked them to be,” the spokeswoman said… Facebook can’t replace the stage, but it offers some really interesting opportunities to perform theater online.”
The theatre has not ruled out additional use of Facebook for its productions.

How to Find Low Cost Legal Help – If You Live in Tennessee
Jan 4th
If you need a lawyer and you can’t afford one and live in Tennessee, you might want to take a gander over at this website started by the state’s Supreme Court called JusticeForAllTN.org. “The court realizes that sometimes people cannot get help from a lawyer because they cannot afford one or they decide they want to represent themselves.” That and some plain-English initiatives started by the court can go a long way towards reducing legal costs for many common activities such as divorce, mediation and parental rights.
Wait a minute. Plain English legal language? Started by a court? For free? Yes, this is for real. And the site is nicely designed and easy to use too. It is about time, and shall we say sets a new high bar for similar kinds of public information sites from their government.
The website, which was created by the court’s Access to Justice Commission, also has tips on self-representation, instructions on who qualifies for legal aid, and a way to locate the nearest such office. The court claims that more than a million residents of the state can’t afford a lawyer, about 20% of total cases brought before the various courts. “To our knowledge, this is the most extensive statewide site,” says Anne-Louise Wirthlin, the coordinator of the project for the court. The project prepared this short promo video:
According to this column by Gail Kerr in The Tennessean, in addition to the site, six of Nashville’s larger law firms have split up the various legal specialties and agreed to offer pro-bono legal services. Both are worthwhile efforts and I hope more states follow with similar acts in the future.

Long Live Firefox: Google Renews its Search Deal
Dec 21st
Ending a month of speculation, Google has renewed its search exclusivity deal with Mozilla, who has long featured Google as the default browser on its Firefox Web browser.
When the deal expired in November, it gave rise to speculation that Google might not renew it, which would deprive Firefox of about 84% of its annual revenue. That possibility seemed bolstered by the fact that Google’s Chrome was said to have recently ousted Firefox as the number two browser on the market. An end to the deal could have put the future of Firefox in jeopardy, although some thought the ominous predictions were overblown.
For the next three years, Google will remain the default search engine in Firefox and Mozilla will continue to get a ton of cash from Google in return.
When the original deal was signed in 2008, Google was only getting started with Chrome, which then grew to be a significant player in the browser market.
Still, Firefox is used by millions of people and Google still wants a piece of that action. If the Google deal were to expire, it’s conceivable that Microsoft could swoop in and replace it with Bing, handing a significant chunk of the browser market share over to one of Google’s chief competitors.
Whatever Google would gain by pulling the financial rug out from beneath Firefox would be overshadowed by it losing even a few points in the search market, which is where most of Google’s revenue comes from.
Google has marketed Chrome as a speedier, more secure browser and capitalized on the familiarity people already have with the Google brand and its products. In the beginning of the month, at least one firm who’s counting said Chrome had eclipsed Firefox as the #2 browser behind Internet Explorer for the first time ever. These numbers vary from source to source, but there’s no denying that Chrome is growing fast. Even so, the company behind it evidently sees no reason to try and bury Firefox even further at this stage of the game.

For the First Time, TV’s Biggest Live Event Will Be Streamed to Your Phone
Dec 20th
When it comes to watching television without the aid of a cable subscription or rabbit ears, the Web is pretty accommodating these days. Most popular shows stream new episodes within 24 hours and even many live television events can be streamed online. One of the biggest deal killers for would-be “cord cutters,” however has always been live sports. If you’re a huge football fan, for example, there’s no way around it: you need TV the old fashioned way.
That’s still largely the case, but watching the year’s biggest sporting event via the Internet just got a whole lot easier. The Super Bowl, which is the most-watched television broadcast in the United States, will be streamed live to computers and smartphones, the NFL announced today.
NBC and the NFL will both stream a high-definition quality broadcast of the game online with alternative camera angles, DVR-style controls and other interactive features.
In addition to being accessible on the desktop Web, the stream will be available via Verizon’s NFL Mobile app, which is available on both iOS and Android.
It’s not the first sporting event to be streamed live, but its certainly the biggest. If the networks ever wanted an opportunity to give large-scale live streaming a test run, this would be a pretty good one.
The Super Bowl attracts over 100 million viewers, most of whom will have no problem sitting around the television set per usual to watch the game. If anything, making it available online will expand the audience and may even offer the networks some interesting viewership statistics and a few takeaways about the future of television.
