Mobile Advertising Explosion: Nexage Hits 8 Billion Impressions Per Month
Aug 10th
There is no question that mobile advertising is exploding. Yet, the numbers that are starting to emerge from some of the mobile advertising firms are eye-popping. Mobile advertising company Nexage is serving up eight billion ad impressions per month, a 50% growth over a three-month period from May to July 2011. Those are some serious numbers. The growth comes as more consumers interact with the Web through their mobile devices but also as more publishers and app developers start pushing ads through their mobile platforms.
Nexage is a real-time bidding (RTB) exchange provider. The impressions it serves are through its Nexage Revenue Platform that allows publishers to use its consolidated software developer kit (SDK) to create rich media ads. Nexage has some big clients, but its most influential to date has been a partnership with Rovio to deliver ads to Angry Birds. It also has partners with other premium brands, such as the National Football League and the Associated Press.
Nexage is carving a nice niche for itself in the mobile advertising market. The Angry Birds contract should help drive a significant amount of ad impressions to Nexage as the game has been downloaded 250 million times on platforms across the world.
“This is really just a marker on the road,” said Ernie Cormier, Nexage president and CEO to ReadWriteWeb.
The RTB process is similar to the way that Google manages AdWords and AdSense on the Web. It enables advertisers to bid on sources on an impression-by-impression basis. This includes allowing Demand-Side Platforms, agency trading desks and other RTB ad networks to bid on impressions through a machine-to-machine interface. It servers between 170 – 180 publishers and developers with 600 different properties between them with about 80 different buyers.
“It is a Google market,” Cormier said. “We are able to compete because we scale efficiently and scale well.”
Outside of Google, which serves mobile ads through its acquisition of AdMob, which has been integrated into Google’s mobile AdSense. In the RTB market, Mobclix is a competitor and long-tail sellers like Smaato compete with lesser known developers and publishers.
Eight billion monthly impressions is a lot, but Cormier believes that there is still quite a bit of room to grow.
“It is a huge market, there is quite a bit of head room. From the supply side, we are just now starting to dip our toe in the water,” Cormier said. “We could grow a lot with existing customers by scaling and creating new capabilities for suppliers and bidders.”
Nexage also plans for international expansion. Though it serves ads all around the world, it does not yet have feet on the ground in locations like South America, where Nexage plans on expanding soon.

Windows Phone Ad Impressions Up 92% in May
Jun 15th
Mobile ad network operator Millennial Media is out with its monthly report for May 2011, and this time, the most interesting figure may be the trend related to Windows Phone. According to its data, Microsoft’s Windows Phone operating system (OS) saw a huge increase in ad impressions last month – up 92% month-over-month, says Millennial. However, the OS only has a 1% share of smartphones on its network, trailing far behind smartphone leaders Android (53%) and iOS (27%).
Apple, HTC, Samsung, RIM
On the charts, the Apple iPhone again retained its number one position as the top smartphone for the 20th month in a row. Apple was also the leading manufacturer on the network.
HTC moved up to the number 4 position, and now has almost 11% market share in the top manufacturers list. Samsung is the number 2 OEM and has 6 devices in the top 20 phones list.
Meanwhile, RIM grew 6% month-over-month to attain 17% of the Smartphone OS mix impression share. This growth was attributed to an increase in BlackBerry Curve devices on the network.
Feature Phones Show Increase
In May, Millennial also saw feature phones experience a 6% increase month-over-month, to account for 17% of the Smartphone, Feature Phone and Connected Device impression share. (See top chart).

Smartphone OS Share
In terms of smartphone OS’s, Android maintained its number one position for the 6th month in a row, with 53% of the Smartphone OS mix impression share.
At 43%, Android was also the second largest platform on the Application Platform Mix in May, which ranks platforms by app revenue. Millennial says it expects Android to start to steal even more share from Apple as developers begin to create more apps for the Android platform in the future.

App Categories
The Music & Entertainment app impressions grew 14% in May, to take over the number 1 spot on the Top 10 Mobile Application Categories ranking. (Games was number 1 last month). This growth is due to the increased use of mobile devices for entertainment, says Millennial. Music apps still drove most the impressions within this category.
As people continue to plan summer vacations, travel apps also saw a 33% increase, month-over-month.

iOS Ad Impressions Up Nearly 50% this Year, Says Millennial Media
May 19th
Millennial Media’s April 2011 report, a snapshot of the company’s large mobile advertising network and the trends it contains, found this month that ad impressions on iOS devices have increased by 47% since January of this year. At the same time, Android impressions have grown just 19%.
And when breaking down the revenue generated by all apps, iOS apps accounted for 50% of revenue, while Android accounted for 39%. This was a 6% month-over-month increase for Apple.

RIM and Symbian ad impressions also grew since January says Millennial, up 17% and 5%, respectively, a trend that highlights the growing mobile ad industry, perhaps, more than it does momentum for those platforms themselves.
Gaming applications were found to be, across the board, the most popular app category. However, travel and sports apps both saw increases in impressions during April. Travel app impressions were up 91% in April and sports apps were up 56% – the former fueled by spring break and summer vacation planning, and the latter by seasonal sporting events.

Device, Manufacturer Trends
As usual, Millennial also detailed the trends it saw in April in terms of devices and platforms on its network. Here, iOS devices (iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch) represented 32% of the Top 15 Manufacturers Impression share for the month. The iPhone also ranked #1 in the top 20 mobile phones.

Other OEMs:
- Samsung maintained the #2 spot for the third month and its Nexus S moved into the #4 position on the chart.
- HTC represented 11% of the Top 15 Manufacturers impression share, a 10% growth month-over-month. It also had the highest number of gadgets on the list.
- LG impression share doubled month-over-month to 6.42% of the Top 15.
- RIM devices represented three of the Top 20 Mobile Phones, and had a combined impression share of 8%.

In total, Android devices continued to account for more impressions (20% of all impressions in April) on Millennial’s network. Android also accounted for 16 of the top 20 phones.
And finally, for the first time ever, the Top 20 Mobile Device list included only smartphones and no feature phones.

Apple’s New Mac App Store: Our First Impressions
Jan 6th
Apple has released an update to its OS this morning, and with it comes the new Mac App Store. The App Store is designed to bring to the Mac the same simplicity that iTunes offers for finding, buying and installing iPhone and iPad apps.
Here are our first impressions of what the App Store offers and how it works.
Browsing for Apps

Although it lives under a separate icon on your dock, the Mac App Store looks almost identical to the iTunes App Store. On the home page, you’ll find the “new and noteworthy” and featured apps. You can view the top paid and the top free apps, staff favorites, and categories. You can access your account, and you can search for apps. As in the iTunes App Store, each app has a description and user reviews.

Navigation isn’t great. There’s no “home” button, but as long as you can master the “back” and “forward” buttons, you should be fine.
You can’t browse the Mac App Store on a device other than a Mac (on your iPhone or on the Web, for example).
Buying Apps
The Mac App store requires an Apple ID in order to download and buy apps from the store. (And a side-note here: if you’re getting an “Error 100″ when you try to use the store for the first time, it means you haven’t signed the new Terms and Conditions that come with the release. I found relaunching the store prompted me to agree and sign.) No need to add payment information, as the App Store uses what’s already on file for your iTunes purchases. You can also use iTunes gift cards
Buying and installing apps is as easy as one click. The app then jumps to your dock.
You can view a list of the apps you’ve purchased and installed. Again, as with iTunes, you can check to see if any of your apps require updating, and if so you’ll be able to update all your apps at once.

What’s For Sale?
Apple boasted over 1000 apps available at launch, the store is full of the “usual suspects.” Well-known Apple titles are available: iMovie and GarageBand, for example, are available for $14.99, and Pages, Keynote, and Numbers are $19.99 each. Angry Birds is there ($4.99), of course, as Evernote and Twitter (both free).

Implications of a Mac App Store
Will the Mac App Store be a boon to developers the way the iTunes App Store has been? Arguably, developers will get better exposure via the store. But as Apple is likely to continue to keep tight reins on what ends up in the store, some types of software – BitTorrent apps, for example, may find themselves closed out.
Mac users, have you tried out the new App Store yet? What do you think about its content and delivery?
