Laplink’s PCmover Helps Windows 8 Migrations
Jan 16th
PCmover Windows 8 Beta Assistant allows users to move selected programs, files and settings from a Windows 7 or Windows 8 machine into a new machine running Windows 8. Laplink has had an earlier version that was very useful in Windows 7 migrations from XP. You can watch a short video of mine here that describes the process.
It will work with the Developer Preview of Win8 as well as all of the upcoming beta releases and release candidate builds. Its only limitation is that both the source and destination machines need to be running 64-bit OS’s.
Like earlier versions of PCmover, programs that had copy-protection or use DRM will need to be uninstalled before doing the migration. Anti-virus software isn’t migrated either, because these are typically tied very closely to the particular OS version. The software will also ship with selected Intel motherboards. There are several different versions of PCmover that range in price from $30 to $60, depending on the features involved. But you can download the Win8 migration version now for free.
If you have to migrate your older Windows machines in mass quantities, there are other tools out there that are more suitable. But for less than 10 PCs, or if you want to see what kind of problems you are going to experience with Win8, PCmover has a good approach.

PSA: BetaBait Helps Apps Lure In Beta Testers
Dec 16th
From the blogging-as-a-service department, here’s a tool I think any app development team could use. BetaBait offers a simple proposition: sign up to try new apps on one side, sign up to find beta testers on the other.
It’s a free, email-driven service. When you join, you’re on the daily email list, which breaks down the apps by category. BetaBait charges $50 for a sponsor slot at the top of the email, so readers see sponsor apps first. That’s it. If you’ve got an app, there’s no reason not to use it.
Co-founder Cody Barbierri wants to connect early startups with early adopters. Bugging people to try an app doesn’t work, he’s found. To solve the problem, BetaBeat targets “the people who love to be the first to try new apps,” so startups can get straight to them via email.
BetaBait just wants to be helpful and make a little dough from sponsors. The website has places to sign up, info for sponsors and a short but helpful primer on marketing an app to early users.

Does it work? It’s only been out two days – and BetaBait itself is still in beta – but apps are already seeing results. I emailed all the founders on today’s list to ask, and I got a bunch of responses right away.
Quoc Nguyen, founder of local hotspot finder RedSpark, says, “We were extremely surprised in the influx of interest in our product the day after we published on BetaBait.”
“I was able to track that 3 people signed up from it,” says Sean Barkulis, co-founder and CEO of personalized “smart-calendar” UPlanMe, which has only been on the list one day. “Not bad, considering we were 3/4 of the way down on the e-mail.”
Check the Mail makes a full-featured email client for iOS devices that, once its out of beta, will be able to work with all the major free email services. Its team says it’s seen traffic and sign-ups both days. “What we really like about BetaBait is that the sign-up process was simple and quick and emphasizes getting the point of our project across in a very succinct manner,” the team says.
I got one really thorough response from Erik Lagerway, founder of stealth social iPad app Hookflash. He says “they really need to improve upon” the BetaBait dashboard, offering analytics and stats to testers. Right now, it’s just a panel to manage the email listing, as seen here:

That does sound nice, but maybe it’s a lot to ask for a totally free service. Lagerway is also frustrated by the inability to track signups specific to BetaBait using its own tools, but UPlanMe handled this by putting a special tag in the link it submitted.
It’s a simple, free service, and I’m sure the team will appreciate Lagerway’s feedback. If you want to put your app in front of people who want to test apps, BetaBait is a no-brainer.

Summly: New App Helps You Read All Your Bookmarked Links in Minutes
Dec 14th
If you had a button that you could press to pause time, make flying birds freeze in mid air, etc. what would you do with that opportunity? Some of us would catch up on all the links we’ve bookmarked as “to read” or favorited on Twitter. I don’t have a button like that, but a new iPhone app that launched today comes pretty close.
Summly (iTunes) is a machine learning app that uses semantic analysis of text and a variety of algorithms to cut long-form text down into just a few hundred characters; it summarizes articles online by capturing just a few of the most important sentences. It does a good job and is available for free in the iTunes store. It’s a powerful tool that I’ve been anxiously waiting for ever since its founder, 16 year old UK dweller Nick D’Aloisio, announced that he had raised venture capital and was shutting down his first iteration of the app, called Trimit. Summly is the new version of the app, it’s free and it’s really easy to use.
Founder D’Aloisio today launches the iPhone app and API, he says a web version and new features like automatic import of Twitter favorites will come soon. The app includes a bookmarklet you can install into mobile Safari and click on any webpage to launch Summly’s automated summarization app.
I like it quite a bit and am very glad to see the app relaunched. D’Aloisio has raised money from Horizon Ventures, the investment arm of Chinese multi-billionaire Li Ka-shing.
Robot, Please Read For Me
D’Aloisio won’t go into great detail about his patent-pending summarization technology but says that Summly first identifies the general category an article is in. He’s got one set of rules for summarizing articles about politics and another for summarizing articles about sports, for example. The technology takes into account keyword frequency, many other factors and learns over time.
Machine Learning expert, data scientist and summarization technology lover Hilary Mason says that there have been simple technologies to do things like this for some time, but that very few compelling products have been made out of them for end users. Mason was particularly pleased with Summly’s search capabilities, which D’Aloisio says are based on a number of 3rd party search APIs, some of which are piped directly into the summarization technology and some of which aren’t.
D’Aloisio says his technology is far from simple; Mason says that’s just how she would go about it. Time will tell whether simplicity or complexity is most effective, but either strategy will go on within the context of a mobile user experience that in the case of Summly seems pretty good.
The end result is really easy to use and is a big time saver.
It goes without saying that there is more good information available online today than people can manageably absorb. Automated summarization algorithms are a great way to catch some highlights and get a sense if you want to dive all the way in to read a full article. In many cases, though, I’m satisfied with Summly’s short summaries. Some summaries are better than others and I’d love to know more about other peoples’ experiences with the app and thoughts on the quality of its results. There are some little changes to the analysis and the user experience that I think would make a big difference.
On balance I’m really happy to have access to the app though. It could be better and hopefully it will be in the future – but I don’t have anything else like this in my life. And I have a whole lot of things I want to read. I bet you do, too.
