Teenagers Want Face Time More Than Texting Time

teens-texting.jpegDespite all of the technology available to teenagers today, they still prefer meeting IRL to texting and “liking” each others’ Facebook statuses.

A new study out from Ericsson surveyed 2000 U.S. teenagers ages 13-17 to understand more about how they socialize through technology.

Texting and Facebook in particular have changed the way that teenagers date, particularly in the “courting” process which concludes with an actual date. The initial first interaction still takes place offline. In fact, when asked the question what type of communication would they miss most if it were taken away, teens responded with “face-to-face.”

According to the study, texting is teens’ second tool of choice when they can’t meet up in-person because it’s easy to do while multitasking. A study from Nielsen showed that teen girls text 1.5 times as much as teen boys.

Facebook came in a sad fourth place after texting and talking on the phone.

Teens see voice calls as better suited for adults. Google+ wasn’t mentioned in this report, but teens do say they’d abandon Facebook for it.

Another less-explored means of communication is video chat, which is mostly by 13- to 15-year-olds, who tend to have more restrictions than 16- to 19-year-olds. When teens video chat, they are often times doing something at the same time, including chores or homework.

When it comes to Facebook, teens see it more as an additional means of communication, and they tend to have far less friends on it than adults. Teens tend to only befriend people they already know, and have an average of 265 friends.

A recent study from Pew showed that 62% of teens on social media sites set their profile to private. Only 19% make their profile partially private, and a mere 17% left their profiles completely public.

Unlike adults, teenagers use Facebook as another means for expressing their emotions by posting song lyrics and movie quotes. There is no reason for this type of information to be public. For teens, Facebook is an extension of their real-life relationships. Adults use Facebook to take the place of forms of communication, using it more for exchanging information and less for friendships they have in real life.

Teenagers are also more likely to have regular mobile phones that smartphones. The 13-year-old age group is more interested in owning a smartphone than the 17-year-olds.

Forget PIN Numbers, Apple Wants to Let You Unlock Your iPhone With Your Face

Compared to how things used to be done with desktop computers, accessing your smartphone seems almost as instantaneous as it gets. You just pick up the device, tap a button, slide a finger to the right, enter (or Swype) your passcode and you’re in. The whole process takes about two seconds and requires virtually no physical energy on your part. Piece of cake.

As quick and painless as this seems, Apple wants to simplify things even further for owners of its iPhones, iPads and other iOS devices. How? Imagine walking up to your phone or tablet in its dock and seeing the screen light up with a greeting. You pick it up and pull it a few inches closer to your face, and – wa la! – the screen is unlocked and the digital universe is instantly at your finger tips.

This reality is not too far off, according to a patent filed recently by Apple. The company wants to build presence and facial recognition into its device so that users can simply approach and peer into a device in order to activate it. No more PIN numbers or button-pressing.

This is a feature already available on jailbroken iPhones, but one that is works very slowly and can easily be hacked using a photograph. Generally, the technology required to get this type of feature to work effectively is pretty sophisticated and, as Patently Apple describes it, “computationally expensive.” The trade-off for using an alternative method is weaker security, which defeats the purpose.

In a somewhat jargon-loaded post, the Apple patent-watching blog describes how Apple plans to overcome the challenges typically associated with implementing such technology. Their method would use a two-dimensional analysis of the placement of facial features as well as skin tone and check those details against “target images” previously captured by the device. This patent comes about a month after news of Apple’s acquisition of a patent for advanced 3D object recognition, which could be used in a similar fashion.

Exactly how they would thwart creative attempts to hack the system wasn’t detailed, but presumably they would have all of that sorted out before this feature sees the light of day.

Plans like this point to the future of how we’ll interact with computers and data in the future. Motion-based gestural control is already here thanks to Microsoft’s Kinect and the iPhone 4S has brought the most capable voice-controlled artificial intelligence application yet to the mass market. Siri is rumored to be coming to other iOS devices, including the iPad 3 and Apple’s much-rumored HD television set, due to launch next year. Thanks to the curious tinkering of developers, we’ve begun to see what tools like the Kinect and Siri are capable of, and their potential goes way beyond desktop computers and mobile devices.

Reports: Google to Face Broad Antitrust Investigation from U.S. Government

Google cannot escape the federal government. Every large acquisition that the company makes is scrutinized for months by feds and now the very nature of Google itself looks like it will go on trial. The Wall Street Journal reports that the Federal Trade Commission will begin serving Google with subpoenas in the start of a broad antitrust investigation into the company’s Web and search dominance.

Google’s business practices will be put under the microscope, especially the core search product that makes up nearly 66% of search traffic in the United States. One of the key issues, according to The Wall Street Journal, will be if Google “unfairly channels users to its growing network of services at the expense of rivals.” Microsoft once went down the antitrust road, and the results were damaging for the software giant. How will Google fare under the federal microscope?

Bloomberg reports that a letter was sent by the Democratic and Republican chairs of the Senate antitrust committee requesting that either CEO Larry Page or Chairman Eric Schmidt be made available to the committee. According to the report, Google is dragging its feet in making either of its top executives available, instead offering to make its top lawyer, David Drummond, available for a hearing.

Google was sent the letter on June 10 and asked for a response from Mountain View by June 15. If subpoenas are necessary they would have to be approvd by the full Senate Judiciary Committee.

According to Bloomberg, a Google spokesperson said that the company will “send them the executive who can answer their questions.” That would be Drummond, who is also Google’s senior vice president for corporate development and “oversees Google’s legal affairs, government relations, corporate development and new business development teams.”

Google has not seen such a broad investigation into its practices from the federal government before. Within recent years it has run into trouble concerning its acquisitions of AdMob, DoubleClick and ITA, all of which are directly tied to Google search and advertising. Within the last week, Google’s $400 million acquisition of AdMeld, a company that focused on return-of-investment optimization of online ad buying, is being investigated by the Department of Justice for antitrust concerns.

The European Union and the state of Texas have launched independent investigations against Google concerning its search and online advertising dominance.
