Forkly Launches to Discover Food You’ll Like the Taste Of

forklylogo.jpgForkly is a beautiful new iPhone app that helps you discover new restaurants you might like and recommends dishes once you’re at restaurants, based on your individual taste. Built by former leaders of location based social network Brightkite, Forkly has been talked about in the tech press for almost a year but it just launched quietly tonight. It looks good.

It looks a lot like FoodSpotting, but with more and better social hooks: influencer scores, embeddable widgets for food bloggers and a prominent news feed of photo photos from your friends.

Sponsor

forklyscreen.jpgForkly also offers restaurant owners analytics and loyalty rewards a little like Foursquare does and special features like customizable menus. Brand promotion is also discussed right away at launch. I will be curious to see how the service deals with the Cold Start problem; tight Twitter integration is one part of it but I’m not sure there’s much for me yet in my town of Portland, Oregon.

Brightkite co-founders Martin May and Brady Becker are behind Forkly and have clearly done a lot of work on it since the first murmurs of its existence surfaced on TechCrunch eleven months ago.

The app looks less like a neighborhood foody news wire (like Foodspotting does) and more like a Yelp for dishes.

ReadWriteWeb readers share why they take pictures of their food.

The Forkly team is clearly watching Foodspotting closely; co-founder May made sure to drop by last week to comment on our coverage of a Foodspotting milestone, pointing out brusquely that we had mistakenly implied that Foodspotting was more popular than it apparently really is. Food app fight, I guess.

Mobile Wallet Service Isis Will Support All Major Payment Networks: MasterCard, Visa, American Express & Discover

Operator-led mobile commerce initiative Isis announced today that it has formed relationships with all four major payment networks here in the U.S.: Visa, MasterCard, American Express and Discover. That means Isis’s upcoming mobile wallet has taken a big leap forward in terms of supporting all the ways people choose to pay, whether by credit card, debit card or even prepaid accounts.

Isis, which uses a wireless chipset-based technology called NFC, will enable people to use their phones to pay for transactions at point-of-sale, just by tapping or waving their phone.

Sponsor

Partnering with all four networks is an important milestone for the company, which had originally planned to launch with just Discover and Barclays U.S. But in May, the coalition, led by Verizon, AT&T and T-Mobile, abruptly changed its course. Instead limiting its partnerships, it opened up to all – meaning all banks, all OEMs and mobile platforms, all payment networks, all card issuers and all operators. Anyone who wanted in, was in.

According to Jaymee Johnson, Isis’ Marketing head, the change meant that Isis would be the “connective tissue” that would work to bring the payments, mobile and retail industries together at last, all of which needed to be involved in order for NFC, as a technology, to really take off.

NFC, for those unaware, is a wireless technology that enables data transfers over short distances. It’s rapidly becoming the backbone of mobile payments and mobile wallet platforms, including those from Visa and Google, to name a few.

With Isis, not only will NFC support payments at point-of-sale, it will also support the ability to redeem mobile coupons and use store loyalty cards, among other things.

Isis will roll out to its first test markets, Austin, Texas and Salt Lake City, Utah, in the first half of 2012.

Discover Pages Similar to the Current One with “Similar Pages”

We’ve seen quite a few ways to search the web by similarity including similarity-based image search , Ambiently bookmarklet (that searches for “related” pages) and TouchGraph Google Browser (that works based on Google’s RELATED: advanced operator).

This week we are looking into an alternative app: Similar Pages

The tool uses its own crawler to collect pages around the web and create The Map of Internet Similarity. The map is claimed to contain more than 3.2 billion pages.

It covers all domain extensions and types of webpages, regardless of their popularity. The degree of similarity between webpages is computed regularly, and the map is updated continuously with newly published sites.

That means that the tool goes “beyond the surface” – unlike regular search engines (e.g. Google that only allow people to see “popular” pages and leave the most part of the web “in the dark”):

Only a very small % of users are browsing results after page 1 or page 2 of the search results pages. The result of this search behavior is that we mostly navigate across a small set of sites with high popularity: most of the web exists in the dark. Millions of interesting sites remain hidden at pages 2, 10, 50 or 100 of the results of a web search, because of their low popularity.

Similar Pages

Similarity is determined with help of PageAffinity which analyzes both the content of pages as well as the linking structure of the web to determine the level of similarity between webpages.

In order to make this a reality, we developed PageAffinity a set of algorithms to identify and calculate the degree of similarity between webpages, bringing to light the ‘long tail’ of the web.

The FireFox Addon

With Similar Pages FireFox addon you can quickly discover similar pages as well as enhance your search efficiency:

1. As a discovery tool, it suggests up to 300 sites “similar in typology and topic” to the current page. When you land on any page and want to see which pages it is similar to, click the toolbar icon and get the list generated in the sidebar:

Similar Pages

The same functionality is available via the right-click context menu:

SimilarPages

2. As a search tool, it loads similar pages right in the Google search results page when you click its icon:

Similar page

From what you can see from the screenshots, the tool really does a good job finding “similar” pages but it gives preference to home pages rather than internal pages.

What are your thoughts?

Researchers Discover a Better Way to Build Ad-Hoc Networks

Mesh network Wireless ad-hoc networks are decentralized. Each node in the network participates in routing data. Wireless Ad-hoc networks have applications in field communications (such as in military combat situations or communication in remote areas) and the Internet of Things. There could also be other applications no one has dreamed up yet. We’ve looked at how the Army and DARPA are developing new ad-hoc networking technology. Now, according to ITworld, two researchers have created an algorithm that may solve a major problem in distributed networking: the bottleneck problem.

Sponsor

Keren Censor-Hillel, a postdoctoral research student at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory, and Hadas Shachnai, an associate professor of computer science at the Technion Israel Institute of Technology presented their work at a symposium held in San Francisco this month by the Association of Computing Machinery and the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics. Their paper can be found here.

ITworld explains the bottleneck problem:

Typical designs for ad hoc networks have each end-node randomly select another node to pass its data onto. This approach is designed to ensure that traffic is distributed evenly across all the nodes. If one node goes down, another can take its place. The problem with this approach, however, is that bottlenecks could be created when only a few end-nodes are tasked to convey all the traffic.

Censor-Hillel and Hadas Shachnai’s algorithm solves the problem by having each node alternate between connecting to another node at complete random and connecting to a node that it has not connected to recently. Alternating between a deterministic and a non-deterministic node selection effectively solves the bottleneck problem.

There is a downside – this approach requires a bit more computational power than previous models of ad-hoc networking. That means very simple devices, such as sensors, may not be able to take advantage of it. However, powerful devices become smaller and cheaper. It’s an approach that could pay off.

5 Tools to Discover Hot Content on Facebook

It’s been quite some time since I shared some tools on researching trends and hot content on Twitter. Today we’ll look at a few tools that allow to discover and keep an eye on hot content shared on Facebook.

Thanks to Recommendations social plugin provided by Facebook, there have been a few interesting projects popping up that allow marketer a deeper insight into what is being shared online.

Discover Hot Content by Domain

LikeButton1. LikeButton offers a sleek, Facebook-style interface that allows to quickly see which pages from any domain are being shared on Facebook.

The tool lets you see the latest shares as well as recently popular ones.

2. SharedLinks is a very similar one (both in look and functionality) but it only allows to see the latest shares by domain.

Discover Hot Content by Topic / Keyword

3. ItsTrendingItsTrending offers a nice clean interface to browse through hot content in a variety of categories:

  • Videos,
  • News,
  • Images,
  • Sports,
  • Tech,
  • Gaming,
  • Entertainment,
  • Comedy.

It also has the list of featured sites in the sidebar.

4. MyPropsMyProps has a more Digg-like interface (I guess it also lets you vote for the hot pages using internal voting system). It can be filtered by categories / topics (Finance, Sports, Politics, etc) as well as by popularity and time-frame:

  • Most shared recently,
  • Most shared ever
  • Newest
  • Popular
  • Most viewed

Each category has a separate search option.

Each feed can be personalized: if you login using Facebook auth, you will be able to see only stories that are popular with your friends (which is something you can see within Facebook actually).

Lastly, you can switch between list and grid view to better play with the tool.

5. AllThingsNowAllThingsNow is another tool with similar functionality which arranges the results a bit differently (so it can actually be the matter of which interface appeals to you more). It can be browsed by category or using the search option.

Unlike the above tool, the search option is not tied to any category, but it is limited to “today’s” results only.

Discover New Websites & Get Rewards for Returning With the New Meebo MiniBar

Well-funded instant messaging and sharing service Meebo is annoucing a new product tonight that will offer loyalty programs and website recommendations for frequent visitors to any site around the web.

The new Meebo MiniBar, not to be confused with the drastically overpriced hotel fare, is a free way for users to choose to share the sites they visit with their friends from various social neetworks including Facebook, to discover related sites frequented by people with similar interests and to gain VIP status on their favorite sites. The technology will be available on Tuesday and will roll out over time to become visible to the 180 million unique users who visit a page that uses Meebo monthly.

Sponsor

This is Not a Game

Cynics may roll their eyes at the extension of the “check in” metaphor to individual web sites, but Meebo emphasizes that its new system is not about competition for Foursquare-style mayorships.

meeboscreen20102.jpgThe Meebo MiniBar will be accessed using a browser extension that will be available for Chrome, Firefox or IE starting on Tuesday, or a button inserted first by a select few corporate partner website publishers, then later on any site that wishes.

Will it be worth using? I suspect that users will find it helpful, interesting, attractive and enjoyable. Website publishers will find it suits their interests of facilitating sharing, discovery and repeat visitors. Meebo says that VIP status, which a user acquired through repeated check-ins at the same site, will be available to publishers by API, so publishers will be able to offer whatever kind of benefit they like to their most loyal visitors.

Those Who Passed This Way Before

Other companies have tried to do things like this; two Colorado companies in particular. Many companies have attempted to help users do something called co-browsing, or social browsing but OneRiot was one of the best-known. It then became a real-time search company and has since focused on selling advertising. The interface for sharing what pages you visited through OneRiot was confusing, unwieldy and unattractive.

Web page check-ins are most associated to date with another Colorado startup called One True Fan. One True Fan is much more game-like than the Meebo MiniBar, for better or for worse. Created by the team that sold MyBlogLog to Yahoo only to see it squandered there, One True Fan is most likely to be the geek set’s page-tracker of choice, especially if the team behind it is generous with access to user data.

Meebo, though, has raised nearly $40 million in venture capital, it has built out a huge network of late-adopting web Instant Messaging users and it places great emphasis on design and usability. It is also employing a strategy in this new tool that puts recommendation first and social sharing second. I like that.

Of course not everything Meebo touches turns to gold. The company lead an industry-wide charge against Facebook Connect this Spring, called XAuth. That effort appears to have moved little, the project mailing list hasn’t seen any discussion since August.

The new Meebo check in app will be available on Tuesday. I think it could prove successful.
