PhoneGap Build Support Comes to Version 1.4.0
Jan 31st
When it comes to the pace of mobile app innovation, there are a couple leaders in the field that need to be watched on a regular basis. Foremost among them is the PhoneGap, also known as Apache Cordova these days. Call it the leader of the leaders. Today the company announced the newest version of its platform, PhoneGap 1.4.0. In addition to fixing many of the bugs found in version 1.3.0, the PhoneGap Build cloud service will be fully supported in the new version. Check out below to see what is new in the platform.
The biggest aspect of PhoneGap 1.4.0 is definitely the integration of PhoneGap build. The service compiles developers HTML, JavaScript and CSS in the cloud and then delivers the app as a ready-made for the Apple App Store, Android Market, webOS, Symbian and BlackBerry. It is one of the more powerful functions of PhoneGap and a great resource to developers looking to build hybrid apps. As we have noted in ReadWriteMobile before, hybrid apps are a good way for the cost-conscious developers to release a native applications to the various popular apps stores.

Here are the highlights of what is new in PhoneGap 1.4.0 as broken down by each platform.
Android
- Work-around Feature for Classic PhoneGap 320×480 resolution
- Add compass demo for Android
- IllegalArgumentException if it is not a JPEG nor a PNG
- Adding JUnit dependency
- Fixing issue with FileTransfer.upload when the passed in url contains a ?
- Allow internal SD Card to be used as storage
- Fixing a timing issue with the web view history not being cleared properly
- Making preference reading code more robust
- Using preference=fullscreen for fullscreen view
BlackBerry
- #124: Adding Battery events to the PlayBook.
- #153: Default for camera destination type changed from DATA_URL to FILE_URI.
- #CB-122: native JSON writer class needs expandable char buffer
- Fixing playbook plugin manager
Note: These are not the BlackBerry highlights. That is literally all of the new documentation for BlackBerry in PhoneGap 1.4.0.
iOS
- Added stand-alone PGViewController (Cleaver – PhoneGap as a Component)
- Added ‘How to Use PhoneGap as a Component’ doc to the .dmg (as a PDF)
- Added for legacy support of deprecated PhoneGapDelegate, in core plugins
- Updated the app icons, splash-screens, and template icons for the Xcode template to Cordova ones
- Added Battery core plugin to PhoneGap.plist
Windows Phone
- Compass API fixes
- Added VERSION file to be like other platforms
- Updated phonegap.js to include XHR updates
- Fix for single document – multipage layouts
- Changed default destination to FILE_URI
- Acceleromter fix #CB-141 – InvariantCulture
There were a lot more bug fixes in PhoneGap version 1.4.0 than in earlier releases. It also comes a little more quickly than previous versions though the update schedule is about once every five or six weeks or so. That would put PhoneGap on par with Firefox, which also is a company that sets the pace of software innovation.
Does the newest version of PhoneGap solve your development problems with the platform? What are you still waiting for to be fixed? Let us know in the comments.

Facebook’s Frictionless Sharing Comes to Your TV With Boxee
Jan 11th
Whether you love it or hate it, Facebook’s so-called frictionless sharing concept isn’t going away anytime soon. From songs played on Spotify to articles read on the Washington Post, everything your friends consume via participating sites is broadcast to the news ticker in real time.
Today, the social TV and streaming media center service Boxee became the latest to join in on the trend when it announced a new partnership with Facebook. Users who opt in can automatically update Facebook about TV shows and other videos they watch through Boxee’s interface.
Like any good content app worth using, Boxee has always allowed users to manually share items via Twitter and Facebook. The service even took its social integration a step further by including Flipboard-style channels of video that are auto-curated based on what one’s friends and followees are sharing online.
With this latest update, the process is streamlined and updates are posted automatically based on what users are watching. The feature will work with Boxee’s new Live TV dongle, so even if you’re watching the latest episode of “The Office” during its original broadcast time, your Facebook friends will all know about it.
Like some other implementations, the Boxee and Facebook integration has its limitations. When you click on a link on the News Feed or Timeline, you’re not taken directly to the content itself, but rather to a landing page with more information abdout the show. This may be annoying to some users, who expect to be able to consume the content immediately.
Mindful of privacy concerns, Boxee makes very clear that the feature is opt-in so one needn’t worry about blasting their friends with excessive or updates.

Google’s Free 64-Language Translator App Comes to the iPad
Jan 5th
Google updated the Google Translate iOS app today adding iPad support. It’s the same set of features as the iPhone version, but the iPad is a great place for a free translator. Technophiles are reading more on tablets lately, and a free Google Translate app is a boon for a more literate, global wired society.
Google Translate has been available on the iPhone since the mobile Web version launched in 2008. The native app released last year added the voice-to-text feature as well as the spoken translations from Google’s voice synthesizer. As one should expect, the translations are never perfect, but they’re great for getting the gist.

The iPad UI is the slightest bit strange. When you paste text into the box, it scoots up, so the language choice buttons go away. You have to pull it down from a very thin tab to get it back (or hit cancel and start over). There’s also no ‘Translate’ button, only ‘Go’ on the keyboard. There’s plenty of room for that under the voice-to-text button, so let this be a humble, simple feature request.
But that’s all very nitpicky. I have no right to complain about an app that will translate text into 64 different languages, many of which it will read aloud to you, for free. The future rocks.
Download Google Translate for iOS from the App Store.
Do you know of any other good translator apps?

Evernote’s ‘Clearly’ Clean-Reading Extension Comes to Firefox
Dec 22nd
Evernote has expanded its read-later browser extension, Clearly, to Firefox. The extension first launched on Chrome in November. Clearly slides in a cleaned-up view of Web articles without ads or navigation, making content more pleasant to read. It automatically turns multi-page articles to single pages.
It’s also a content shifting tool. Clicking the Evernote elephant icon in the sidebar saves the cleaned up version to your Evernote account so it can be read on all devices. The article viewer also comes with three themes, and beyond that, all the fonts, colors and alignments can be customized.
Evernote thinks big, which is why it made our top 10 consumer Web products of the year. It wants to be a 100-year company, a cloud-based desk drawer for all our little files. It has recently shipped some interesting, unusual applications, including a food scrapbook called Evernote Food and a name remembering app called Hello.
Clearly brings Evernote into an increasingly crowded market dominated by dedicated read-later services like Instapaper and Read It Later. Like Clearly, Read It Later turns all articles into single-page views, but Instapaper intentionally doesn’t, in order to respect the revenue decisions of publishers.
Evernote Clearly could gain significant traction if users find they enjoy having all their cloud-synced stuff in one place, instead of having a separate app for reading. Content shifting is a new trend, and Evernote, whose basic service is free, is well positioned to introduce the behavior to new users.
Chrome and Firefox are the next biggest browsers after Internet Explorer, so Evernote Clearly is now available to a sizable chunk of the market. Chrome actually surpassed Firefox for the first time this month, only three years after launching, but Firefox renewed its search deal with Google yesterday, giving it a new lease on life.
You can install Clearly for Chrome or Firefox.
Do you use a clean-reading service? Which one do you use?

Microsoft’s Answer to Dropbox Comes to the iPhone
Dec 13th
Personal cloud storage is all the rage these days. Dropbox continues to be one of the most buzzed-about startups and its enterprise-focused counterpart Box is making moves toward the consumer market as well. For music files, Google, Amazon and Apple all offer cloud-based storage lockers and iOS allows syncing of other types of content via iCloud.
iPhone owners not satisfied with the available options now have a new one in Microsoft’s SkyDrive, which launched its first iOS app today. The four-year-old service has been available to Windows users on the desktop and Windows Phone platform for some time. Today, it starts to branch out onto other platforms.
The SkyDrive app is going to be most practical for Windows users, which is not an insignificant potential user base for the app. By bringing it to iOS, Microsoft acknowledges that its own mobile operating system doesn’t have quite the adoption rate that its desktop OS does.
Lots of Windows users are carrying around iPhones, so it only makes sense for Microsoft to let them access their cloud-stored files from the device. Otherwise, most people will instinctively go for a solution like Dropbox. With its 25 GB of free space, SkyDrive is an attractive alternative to Dropbox, who only offers only two. Box’s free account comes with five gigabytes of free storage.
This is just the latest iOS app from Microsoft, who released an application for Bing as well OneNote, which may foreshadow the eventual launch of Microsoft Office for iOS.
