Amazon vs. Best Buy: A Tale of Two Retailers
Apr 18th
It’s bad enough that Best Buy has to switch CEOs – because of potential personal misconduct – while it’s also trying to make a comeback.
But it’s also about to lose a familiar foe in the rear-view mirror. This year, Amazon will almost certainly overcome Best Buy in full-year revenue for the first time.
When Amazon launched in 1995, Best Buy was already a multibillion-dollar business. Around the height of the DVD era, Best Buy was still $25 billion in yearly sales ahead of Amazon.
But during the past few years, Best Buy has stalled. Meanwhile, Amazon – fueled by new digital businesses like Amazon Web Services and the Kindle, Prime membership and international expansion – has surged.
A look at the companies’ growth rates tells the story well: While Amazon has grown sales by 41%, 40% and 28% the past three years, Best Buy’s fiscal year sales growth rates have been 2%, 0%, and 10%.
Now, Best Buy expects another flat year, despite a longer (by a week) fiscal year ending in February 2013. And it plans to close 50 “big-box” U.S. stores, reflecting the shift in electronics retail as it opens 100 new “small-format” Best Buy Mobile stores.
Meanwhile, Best Buy hopes to grow online revenue 15% this year, while Wall Street expects Amazon to grow 30%.
Amazon – famously a money-loser for most of its early life – even beat Best Buy in profitability last year, as Best Buy reported a big loss on special charges. (Although Amazon still isn’t fabulously profitable the way Apple or Google are, and is now in the business of selling tablet computers at a loss.)
Now the question is whether Best Buy can transform itself and recover. It at least anticipates a return to profitability this year. But long-term?

Is Dunn’s Resignation the Knockout Punch for Best Buy?
Apr 16th
The resignation of Best Buy CEO Brian Dunn last week could be the start of a massive shift for not only Best Buy, but for big-box retailers across a wide range of sectors.
“This is not the end of physical media sales, but that will become a minority niche business,” said Marty Wolf, a merger and acquisitions adviser. “Retailers in general are going to have to realize that retail space in many circumstances is becoming a showroom for the Internet – or retailers need to make the space an entertainment and services facility as Apple has done.”
Along with last week’s announcement of Dunn’s resignation, Best Buy said it would close 50 of its stores. Dunn was a 26-year veteran of the company, and while some allegations of an affair have been raised since he stepped down, most company observers are speculating he was primarily forced out because of his inability to convert the e-commerce business quickly enough to compete with Amazon.
In many ways, Best Buy became a victim of some of the very technology it used. Visitors to its retail shops could instantly comparison shop with tablets and smartphones.
“Dunn’s successor will grapple with consumers’ growing comfort in making purchases with smartphones, sometimes inside of Best Buy stores, as well as the popularity of buying from Apple Inc. and Amazon,” said Adam Hanft, CEO of marketing firm Hanft Projects. “That is the triple demon that they face. They get foot traffic, but they’re not converting that into sales because people are in there with their iPads seeing if they can get a better buy.”
Perhaps ironically, Best Buy had started to position itself for the shift, acquiring mindSHIFT for $167 million to extend its business further beyond retail. But that may have been too little, too late.
“The company could not move fast enough to transform – even as it is closing stores, the market could not wait,” Wolf said.
Dunn joins a string of high-profile CEO ousters in the tech sector, according to Bobby Zafarnia, president of Praecere Interactive. He pointed to HP and former CEO Mark Hurd, Yahoo and former CEO Carol Bartz, and Olympus and former CEO Michael Woodford as recent examples.
“There’s the larger narrative of CEO resignations in the tech and retail industries that results in tremendous negative attention for the company, hurting investor confidence in Best Buy,” he said. “Whether it’s the company that faces scrutiny, board of directors or CEO’s behavior that’s in question, the scandal is what will always dominate the headlines until a new leader is installed and profits are back on track – and that’s never an overnight development.”

RWW Recommends: The Best Social TV App for iPad
Apr 10th
Here on ReadWriteWeb, we’ve been taking a close look at some of the best “second screen” apps designed to supplement the TV-watching process. Last week, we reviewed i.TV, which is an excellent way to find information related to a given show. Which is the best app for enhancing the social experience? We looked at quite a few of them and selected our favorite below.
The cross section between television and social media is undeniably a huge deal. As services like Twitter and Facebook continue to grow, more and more people are inclined to use them to discuss TV shows. Whether it’s during an initial broadcast or after the fact, people take to their respective digital networks to comment on programs in real time.
Increasingly, viewers are doing this from mobile devices like smartphones and tablets. Nielsen’s latest data suggests that nearly 90% of tablet owners use the devices while watching TV. That’s a huge increase over previous stats, which had the number just above 40%.
It’s more than just chatter. Studies have shown that there’s actually a correlation between social media buzz and television ratings. This means big things for broadcasters and advertisers alike, so we’re not likely to see the trend go away anytime soon.

There are many ways to converse with others about TV via social media. One obvious approach would be to go straight to Twitter or Facebook and fire away. If the show was currently popular, chances are that others would be tuned in. But there are no guarantees. For a better experience, there is a growing selection of apps designed to bring that social TV experience to the forefront and narrow the focus of the conversation.
One of the better apps of this type is yap.TV. The 19-month-old startup aims to serve as a sort of TV Guide of the future, offering an hourly lineup of television shows but with a ton of interactivity built on top of it.
A Tablet-Friendly UI and Deep Social Integrations
One of yap.TV’s strong suits is its design. Some iPad apps are sufficiently functional but don’t necessarily look great, while others have clearly been thoughtfully designed with the tablet-form factor in mind. yap.TV fits in the latter category. It sports a tile-based UI with animations that are fluid without being distracting. It breaks content down by time, genre, or whether or not you’ve added it to your list of favorites.
Tapping on a given show reveals a multipanel grid of squares, each displaying a different type of content: tweets, polls, live chats, photos and a tile containing general information about the show.
The social integration is very tight. The option to say, “I’m watching such-and-such” on Twitter or Facebook is standard fare for this kind of app. yap.TV goes well beyond that, allowing users to engage in Twitter conversations in real time or use its own native live-chat feature. The in-app chats are sometimes vacant and thus aren’t incredibly useful, but presumably that will change as its user base grows. In the meantime, most shows have an active stream of tweets flowing through the app.
The integration with Facebook runs deep as well, but it could be even better. Facebook chat works natively inside yap.TV, which is a nice touch. The app also pulls in data about which movies and TV shows your friends have liked on Facebook and lists those. Additionally, you can announce that you’re watching a given show on Facebook, but the app doesn’t allow you to customize that message – which is an unfortunate limitation.
This category of app is still evolving, but yap.TV does a pretty solid job of nailing the social side of the second screen experience.
